Summary:
The Senior Manager, Independent Commercial Payment Product Credit Underwriting leads multiple teams responsible for independently evaluating and underwriting credit, settlement, and payment risk across commercial payment products. This role develops departmental plans, establishes underwriting priorities, allocates resources, and maintains decision frameworks that align product growth with the bank’s risk appetite. The Senior Manager partners with Product, Sales, Credit, Risk, Compliance, Operations, and other stakeholders to resolve complex underwriting matters and influence decisions affecting exposure, portfolio performance, and customer relationships.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Lead multiple related underwriting teams, setting priorities, allocating resources, establishing performance expectations, and maintaining consistent decision quality across commercial payment products.
- Oversee complex financial and credit analysis involving commercial applications, financial statements, bank statements, tax returns, commercial bureau information, and corporate ownership structures to assess solvency and repayment capacity.
- Establish decision practices and delegated authority for approving, conditioning, or declining higher-risk or larger-exposure commercial payment products, including corporate credit cards, ACH processing, B2B virtual cards, and real-time payments.
- Direct the structuring of settlement limits, transaction thresholds, reserve requirements, rolling reserves, collateral, guarantees, and other risk-mitigation terms based on the customer’s risk profile and the bank’s risk appetite.
- Oversee evaluations of business models, sales practices, fulfillment timelines, payment activity, and other risk indicators to assess potential chargebacks, payment reversals, fraud exposure, and financial loss.
- Maintain underwriting standards for website and digital-footprint reviews, including merchant transparency, security practices, refund and pricing disclosures, and adherence to applicable card-network requirements.
- Direct periodic account reviews, portfolio renewals, and requests for processing or exposure-limit increases, ensuring emerging risks and material changes in financial condition are appropriately evaluated.
- Identify and resolve complex underwriting, operational, and organizational issues, lead improvements to underwriting practices and controls, and persuade business and risk leaders to take action when product growth or customer requests create unacceptable exposure.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree
- 10 years of relevant experience in commercial credit, commercial underwriting, merchant acquiring, commercial payments, portfolio risk management, or a related financial services discipline.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience underwriting complex commercial credit or payment exposures using financial statements, bank statements, tax returns, bureau information, ownership structures, and other financial or operational data.
- Experience making or overseeing approval, conditional approval, and decline decisions for higher-risk or larger-exposure commercial relationships.
- Knowledge of commercial payment products such as corporate credit cards, ACH processing, virtual cards, real-time payments, or merchant payment acceptance.
- Experience establishing exposure limits, reserves, collateral requirements, guarantees, transaction controls, or other risk-mitigation structures.
- Demonstrated ability to develop departmental priorities, allocate resources, resolve complex risk issues, and influence senior business and risk stakeholders.
- Experience underwriting merchant-acquiring, payment-processing, corporate card, treasury management, or integrated-payables relationships.
- Experience assessing chargeback, settlement, payment-reversal, fraud, and fulfillment risk for card-present and digital payment activity.
- Knowledge of card-network requirements, commercial payment regulations, underwriting controls, and portfolio-monitoring practices.
- Experience developing underwriting policies, approval authorities, decision frameworks, quality-assurance practices, or risk-rating methodologies.
- Advanced degree or relevant professional certification in finance, accounting, credit, payments, or risk management.
