Description

We have exciting opportunities for Investment Analysts to join our Public Markets Investments team on a permanent basis, based in our London office with hybrid working.

Who we are

Railpen is responsible for the safekeeping and investment of around £34 billion in assets and the administration of several pension schemes, including the Railways Pension Scheme, one of the UK's largest and longest established pension funds.

Our heritage of looking after the pension needs of the rail industry and its employees gives us our name and our unique outlook on how we serve our members. Railpen takes a holistic view, focusing on how we serve members today and how we can positively impact the communities and the world they will retire into.

Our values of integrity, community and alignment are the guiding principles that influence our behaviour. They help us make decisions and shape our relationships with others. They’re what we stand for. You will actively demonstrate our values, helping to create a safe environment, to place the needs of the community above oneself and, through a culture of ‘fair challenge’, align to the best interests of our members.

The Role

The roles will support the research, implementation, monitoring and continuous improvement of multi-asset, systematic and fundamental equity portfolios. They will combine quantitative research, portfolio

analytics and technology development, helping the team deliver robust investment outcomes while strengthening its shared data, research and production infrastructure.

You’ll:

  • Develop and maintain quantitative models to identify new investment opportunities, enhance portfolio construction approaches and improve existing strategies across a multi-asset investment platform.
  • Apply data science, programming and analytical techniques to support fundamental equity research, creating models, tools and dashboards that generate actionable investment insights.
  • Partner with Portfolio Managers to monitor portfolio performance, risk and exposures, providing analysis that supports informed investment decisions and effective portfolio management.
  • Build and enhance datasets, analytical tools and reporting capabilities, driving continuous improvement in data management, technology and the adoption of innovative solutions, including AI.
  • Produce clear and impactful analysis, reporting and presentations for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Collaborate across Investments, Trading, Risk, Compliance, Technology and Operations, contributing to a culture of knowledge sharing, innovation and strong governance.

This role is classified as a ‘Certified Person’ under the Senior Managers and Certification Regime (SMCR) and will therefore be subject to the additional requirements prescribed by the FCA.

This role is not eligible for visa sponsorship. Applicants must have the legal right to work in the UK.

The Person

We’re looking for an analytical and intellectually curious professional with strong attention to detail and objective judgement. A proactive and collaborative team player, able to communicate complex quantitative concepts clearly, take ownership of deliverables from inception to completion, and maintain high standards of research quality, integrity and continuous learning.

You’ll ideally have:

  • Approximately three years’ experience in quantitative investment research, systematic investing, portfolio analytics, quantitative risk, or a closely related role. This experience can include quantitative support within a fundamentally driven or macro research process.
  • A strong academic background in a quantitative discipline such as mathematics, statistics, computer science, engineering, physics, econometrics or quantitative finance; a relevant postgraduate qualification is advantageous but not essential.
  • Practical experience using Python for data analysis, research or model development; familiarity with SQL, version control, testing and collaborative software-development practices is desirable.
  • Practical experience using Bloomberg BQuant/BQL a plus
  • Sound knowledge of statistics, econometrics, time-series analysis and numerical methods, with the ability to design and evaluate robust empirical research.
  • Understanding of financial markets and investment concepts, including portfolio risk, performance measurement and systematic strategy implementation.
