Irrigation Technician

JOB SUMMARY

Responsibilities include, but not limited to all facets of irrigation design, installation, inspection, diagnosing, and major and minor repairs in Town Parks and grounds.  Provides direct support for special events conducted at area parks as required.  Work with light and some heavy equipment.

EDUCATION/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE

1. High School Diploma or GED, and two (2) years irrigation design, installation and repair experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
2. Supervisory experience preferred.
3. Must pass a pre-employment drug screening and/or post-offer physical exam.

 

LICENSES OR CERTIFICATES

1. Possession of a TCEQ Irrigation Technician or the ability to obtain an Irrigation Technician within one year.  If hired without possession of a TCEQ Irrigation License an employment agreement will be required.
2. TCEQ Landscape Irrigator preferred
3. TCEQ BPAT License preferred.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

1. Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently.
2. Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
3. Good written and verbal communication skills are essential.

 

OTHER SKILLS & ABILITIES

Knowledge of irrigation design, installation, and repair techniques. Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision. Ability to determine mechanical repair needs and estimate the cost and time of repairs. Remain flexible for working with a variety of tasks daily. Use a variety of equipment maintenance tools and equipment. Ability to perform equipment mechanic work including the diagnosing, troubleshooting, fabricating and repair of park equipment. Read and understand various manuals, blueprints and schematics. Set-up facilities and/or park areas for special events. Perform a variety of general park maintenance tasks as assigned. Perform various labor tasks such as cleaning restrooms, performing preventive maintenance on city properties, painting and general park repairs as required.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished by management in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to operate various machines and/or equipment; and reach with hands and arms.  The employee frequently is required to talk and hear.  The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described herein are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.  Outdoor environment; exposure to conditions of construction and Public Works project sites including loud noises, dust, heavy vehicles and equipment; exposure to inclement weather; exposure to traffic and other hazards while conducting field inspections; exposure to moving vehicles and equipment, slippery surfaces, and other related conditions.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

1. Responsible for the installation, maintenance and repair of complex irrigation systems.
2. Responsible for making necessary repairs, adjustments, and maintenance of all irrigation system components.
3. Compiles and submits reports and records on condition of irrigation systems.
4. Conducts regular system inspections, performs preventive maintenance and troubleshooting exercise.
5. Designs, schedules and installs pipes, fittings, spray heads, rotors, controls and emergency shut offs.
6. Restores grounds to orderly fashion after installation or repairs.
7. Maintains irrigation supply inventory and distributes materials.
8. Keeps CEU’s current each year.
9. Coordinates work with proposed building and construction plans.
10. Set-up facilities and/or park areas for special events.
11. Perform a variety of general park maintenance tasks as assigned.
12. Perform various labor tasks such as cleaning restrooms, performing preventive maintenance on Town properties, painting and general park repairs as required.
13. Other duties as assigned.
