The purpose of this position is to ensure City and golf course irrigation systems are installed and operating correctly. This is accomplished by surveying the perimeter, identifying installation needs, operating appropriate equipment such as tractors, installing irrigation systems, inspecting existing irrigation systems, performing preventative maintenance and repairing irrigation systems as needed. Other duties may include completing work orders, tracking supplies and installation costs, assisting other employees as needed and interfacing with other City employees and citizens. This position does not provide direction to other employees.
- Ensures maintenance of the City parks and golf course by performing installations of irrigation systems, digging trenches for installations, surveying perimeters, reading work orders, assisting other employees, operating tractors, voltimeters and other equipment and completing the appropriate paperwork.
- Performs repairs to City irrigation systems by identifying faulty or problematic parts, replacing and repairing parts when appropriate, digging to view parts of the Irrigation system, retrieving needed parts and equipment, operating equipment and machinery such as trenchers, handling tools such as saws, hammers and chain locks, performing preventative maintenance, wiring irrigation clocks, locating and repairing leaks and completing appropriate paperwork.
- Maintains the integrity of irrigation work by completing inspection paperwork, testing irrigation systems, indicating problems with systems, producing work orders, tracking labor costs and filing paperwork when needed.
- Provides preventative maintenance to City parks, golf course and irrigation systems by inspecting irrigation systems, determining possible repairs or upgrades, addressing problematic systems as identified by others and completing work orders for identified needs.
Education and Experience
Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. Education and experience that provide the necessary knowledge and skills may also be considered, but a typical way to qualify is by obtaining:
- High school diploma or equivalent with six (6) months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency and one (1) year of relevant experience.
Conditions of Employment

Hours/Work Schedule
- This is a full-time non-exempt position with benefits.
- Must be able to work a varied schedule that includes working evenings, nights and weekends.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
Heavy - Exerting 50-100 lbs. occasionally, 10-25 lbs. frequently, or up to 10-20 lbs. constantly
- Constant physical activity including lifting, carrying, climbing, or prolonged standing.
- Lifting/carrying 50–75+ lbs; frequent pushing/pulling.
- High manual dexterity and mobility required.
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
- Reading - Basic - Ability to recognize meaning of common two- or three-syllable words. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in elementary school up to high school. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.
- Math - Intermediate - Ability to deal with system of real numbers; practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions and measurement. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in high school up to college. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.
- Writing - Basic - Ability to write simple sentences containing subject, verb, and object, and/or series of numbers, names, and addresses. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in elementary school up to high school. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.
- Managerial - Receives general directions. The employee normally performs the job by following established standard operating procedures and/or policies. The employee may choose the appropriate procedure or policy. Performance is reviewed periodically.
- Supervisory / Organizational Control - Work requires the occasional direction of helpers, assistants, seasonal employees, interns, volunteers or temporary employees.
- Complexity - Work involves choices of action within limits set by standard practices and procedures. Professional judgment is required to apply the proper course of action.
- Interpersonal / Human Relations Skills - Discussion Occasional: 20% or less of work time.
