Position Summary

The Tanenbaum Open Science Institute (TOSI) was created in 2016 to advance an Open Science paradigm shift in research, in Canada and beyond. TOSI’s mission is to support the adoption and advancement of Open Science principles and practices across a wide range of research and innovation contexts, while continuing to strengthen their implementation within The Neuro (Montreal Neurological Institute-Hospital), a global leader in institutional Open Science.

Reporting to TOSI’s Chief Executive Officer, the Communications Officer will support this mission through robust communications and knowledge transfer activities. The candidate’s main responsibility will be to implement TOSI’s communications plan to inform, promote, and engage a broad array of partners and stakeholders. They will support the planning and delivery of special events, conferences, webinars, and educational initiatives in alignment with TOSI’s Open Science mission and strategic priorities.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

• Develop and implement the communications plan to engage diverse stakeholders, and to communicate and promote key TOSI and partner initiatives to various audiences.
• Work collaboratively across TOSI teams to disseminate and promote relevant Open Science initiatives, platforms, and projects to partners and stakeholders.
• Promote and communicate the events across channels, including audience outreach, registration support, and post-event communications.
• Lead and manage communications for the international Metascience 2027 Conference and related metascience initiatives, serving as the key contact for all associated communications activities
• Develop  communications across various digital platforms (website, social media, newsletters, Microsoft Teams, Google Suite, Slack, etc.).
• Collaborate with student groups and other working groups under the TOSI umbrella to support their communication needs.
• Support emerging communications needs related to metascience and related initiatives.
• Draft articles, statements, briefings, op-eds, talking points, key messages, impact reports, and other written materials, ensuring a high level of consistency, accuracy, and quality for a variety of audiences.
• Collaborate with partner institutions’ communications teams, external service providers, and McGill communications teams to coordinate communications and promotional materials.
• Act as an intermediary between the media and TOSI; develop and maintain media contacts to foster strong coverage of TOSI activities and Open Science initiatives.
• Monitor developments in Open Science, including trends, policies, and best practices, to inform communications and support strategic priorities.

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities

Bachelor’s Degree and 3 years of related experience in science communications, scientific community management, and/or outreach.

Demonstrated ability to promote engagement and knowledge transfer within distributed research communities and between researchers and the public. Proven ability to translate complex scientific concepts and data into accessible, audience-specific materials across multiple formats (written, audiovisual, digital). Experience with communications tools and platforms (website builders, Microsoft Office, Adobe Suite, social media, etc.) and presentation software. Exceptional attention to detail in producing high-quality content and materials. Ability to work effectively with peers, leadership, and external partners. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment; strong organizational and prioritization skills. Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to build relationships and networks. Experience implementing communications plans in higher education, healthcare, or nonprofit environments is an asset. Demonstrated interest in and commitment to Open Science is a strong asset. Knowledge of artificial intelligence (AI) tools and their application in communications is considered an asset.
