General Statement of Duties
Assists in writing grants, grant proposals, developing reports, maintaining records, and occasional transportation of fire and rescue apparatus to locations as needed for maintenance, repair, and other non-emergency operational needs

Distinguishing Features of the Class
An employee in this class assists the Assistant Chief of Supportive Services by performing a variety of administrative and clerical support duties. Work generally requires the employee to independently perform a variety of administrative duties that support the fire department. This position will be responsible for grant research, development, preparation, and submittal of grant applications. Additional duties will ensure effective and efficient operations of fire and rescue apparatus, tools, and maintenance of fire equipment. The employee must be able to travel to and move around job sites independently. Job sites may involve uneven or rough terrain, steep slopes, inclines and unknown topography. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions and must be able to endure adverse climatic conditions for short periods of time. Must wear protective clothing, i.e., hard hats, safety vests, and safety shoes when needed. The noise level in the office work environment is usually moderate but could vary when performing on-site field visits. Employee will work an average of 20 hours per week.The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spend working on this class. Management may assign additional functions related the type of work of the class as necessary.

  • Writing, submitting, and managing grant proposals.
    Identifying grant funding opportunities
  • Furnishing prospective funders with supporting documents.
  • Maintaining records in hard copies and computer databases.
  • Supports and assists with fire department activities. 
  • Performs other related work as assigned. 
  • Ability to perform or learn to perform daily checks on all types of fire rescue apparatus at any GFD facility. 
  • Ability to drive and operate, or learn to drive and operate, all types of fire rescue apparatus during non-emergency operations to include moving apparatus to and from regional service centers/shops.
  • Transports equipment to and from repair facilities. 
  • Assists with NFPA Testing in the following areas: hose testing, ladder testing, pump testing, etc. 
  • Assists in the maintenance of the GFD fleet. 
  • Ability to perform, or learn to perform, routine shop duties and tool maintenance.
  • Knowledge of or the ability to obtain knowledge in the methods, materials, tools, and 
    practices of fire industry equipment.
  • Have proficient knowledge of project management and fundraising methods.
  • Be a deadline-driven team player with multi-tasking abilities.
  • Proficient with MS Office Word and Excel.
  • Excellent knowledge of fundraising information sources
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to meet deadlines. 
  • Have knowledge of area roads to transport equipment to and from repair facilities. 
  • Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions in fire equipment handling and 
    maintenance, or the ability to learn these hazards and safety precautions.
  • General knowledge of the use, operation, and maintenance of heavy equipment and 
    other vehicles, or the ability to learn these measures.
  • Skill in the use and care of tools employed in fire and rescue. 
  • Have knowledge of or be willing to attend classes, where appropriate or required, related 
    to fire operations, equipment, related areas/assignments.
  • Ability to complete routine reports of work accomplished. 
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
  • High school diploma or equivalent, supplemented by training/certification in apparatus/facility maintenance, training/certification in fire suppression, and considerable related experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:

  • Possession of a valid North Carolina Class B driver's license.

  • Possession of or ability to obtain repair certification including, but not limited to, ladder repair, pump school, and small motor repair.  

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. 

UNAVOIDABLE HAZARDS (WORK ENVIRONMENT):

Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.

The employee must be able to travel to and move around job sites independently. Job sites may involve uneven or rough terrain, steep slopes, inclines and unknown topography. Employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions and frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment may be loud at times. Employee will be required to wear personal protective equipment and may be exposed to blood-borne pathogens.
