Field Service Engineer, Mid-Level
Overview
SimTech, Inc., recognized as one of the 2026 Best Places for Working Parents, is seeking a Field Service Engineer, Mid-Level, to join our dynamic and diverse team in Huntsville, AL.
SimTech offers a market leading compensation package with excellent benefits, work/life balance, outstanding retirement plan, career advancement and much more.
This role provides on-site engineering support for complex military equipment, including EO/IR and radar sensor systems, at customer and field locations. Beyond hands-on operation and sustainment, the engineer leads field troubleshooting and root-cause investigations, plans and executes field modifications and upgrades, verifies sensor performance, and runs site acceptance and checkout after installation. The engineer also provides technical direction to field service representatives, serves as the customer's on-site technical point of contact, and relays operational requirements and field data back to engineering.
Responsibilities
Deploy to customer and field sites to install, operate, maintain, and sustain complex military equipment, keeping it mission ready.
Coordinate reach back with home-station engineering to resolve issues that exceed on-site capability.
Lead root-cause investigations of field failures and drive corrective actions to closure with engineering.
Plan and execute field modifications, upgrades, and engineering changes on fielded systems under configuration control.
Execute site acceptance and checkout procedures after installation or upgrade and document the results.
Verify EO/IR and radar sensor performance in the field, including boresight, alignment, and calibration checks against expected system behavior.
Load software and firmware, apply configuration changes, and verify network connectivity in the field.
Collect system and sensor performance data and report anomalies and failure trends back to engineering.
Provide technical direction and mentorship to field service representatives at deployed sites.
Act as a customer-facing technical point of contact during integration and test events, communicating status and representing engineering in customer discussions.
Capture operational requirements and mission feedback from operators and maintainers and relay them to engineering.
Support training and New Equipment Training (NET), preparing and delivering instruction so operators and maintainers can field and sustain delivered systems.
Maintain field service logs, maintenance records, and status reports.
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications & Education Requirements and Desired Skillsets
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution.
5+ years of field engineering, integration, or sustainment engineering experience on complex military equipment in operational environments.
Experience operating, calibrating, and troubleshooting EO/IR and radar sensor systems.
Strong systems-level troubleshooting skills across electrical, mechanical, software, and network domains with limited reach back.
Working knowledge of networking fundamentals (IP addressing, cabling, switching, and routing) and the ability to troubleshoot connectivity issues.
Proficiency analyzing large test data sets using Python or equivalent tooling and producing concise, decision-ready summaries.
Ability to read technical manuals, schematics, and maintenance procedures.
Comfortable operating independently with minimal supervision, including making sound calls in the field without direct engineering support on hand.
Strong customer-facing communication skills, including the ability to lead technical status conversations with customers and program stakeholders.
Travel of approximately 50% is expected, including extended field deployments.
Ability to work extended hours and irregular shifts during deployments, mission operations, and test events.
Experience installing field modifications and upgrades on fielded systems under configuration control is preferred.
Experience with military and commercial hardware standards (MIL-STD, MIL-SPEC) is preferred.
Prior military service with a technical or maintenance MOS, such as flight line, avionics, or mission-system maintenance, is preferred.
U.S. Citizenship with an active Secret security clearance and the ability to maintain the designated clearance level.
