Overview

Under the direction of the Commissioner, the Director of Resource Development is responsible for the strategic leadership, implementation, and oversight of all fundraising and development activities for the Boston Centers for Youth & Families (BCYF), the City of Boston’s largest municipal department. This includes securing financial resources from all sectors through grant writing, donor cultivation, special events, and public funding opportunities to advance the BCYF mission.

Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Planning:

  • Serve as a member of BCYF's Executive Leadership team, actively contributing to long-term institutional planning and strategic direction. 
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive,multi-year resource development strategy to meet established financial objectives and ensure long-term sustainability. 
  • Work closely with BCYF Operations and Finance staff to align fundraising strategies with operational needs and budgetary goals.
  • Advocate for key legislation at the State and Federal levels that will enhance BCYF's resources and opportunities. 

Fundraising & Revenue Generation: 

  • Create and execute targeted strategies for the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of individual, corporate, and institutional donors.
  • Identify, review, and pursue public and private grant opportunities; lead the research, writing, and submission of compelling grant proposals and reports.
  • Represent BCYF in meetings with prospective donors, foundations, and corporate partners.

Donor & Stakeholder Relations: 

  • Serve as the primary liaison between BCYF and the Foundation for the BCYF Board and Executive Committee.
  • Develop and manage a portfolio of major donors and prospects, designing and implementing tailored cultivation and stewardship plans.
  • Oversee stakeholder engagement, including the management of key citywide partners and volunteers, in coordination with the Executive team.

Team & Operations Management:

  • Supervise, mentor, and motivate a committed team of development professionals, setting clear goals and fostering a collaborative environment.
  • Manage the development budget, providing regular reporting and analysis on progress toward goals.
  • Track donor activity, analyze trends, and report on key metrics.
  • Demonstrate excellent planning and project management skills to oversee and implement both short and long-term departmental goals.

Communication & Events:

  • Lead the planning and execution of BCYF special events in coordination with the Communications, Operations, and Programming teams.
  • Ensure all donor and stakeholder communications are compelling, consistent, and aligned with BCYF's brand.
  • Perform other duties and related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications

  • Six (6) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional experience in development with a proven record of increasing accomplishments and responsibilities.
  • Two (2) years of experience must include staff supervision, managerial duties, and budget management.
  • Ability to exercise excellent judgment and focus on detail.
  • Strong verbal and written communication, organizational, and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated competency with fundraising databases and proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Track record of collaborating with executive leadership, donors, and cross-functional teams to achieve fundraising goals.
  • All candidates must demonstrate a strong enthusiasm for the BCYF mission.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree preferred and may be substituted for three (3) years of the required experience.
  • Familiarity with all aspects of resource development, including annual giving, major gifts, events, planned giving, institutional giving, and public funding.
  • Exceptional grant writing and presentation skills.
