Qualifications
Additional Job Details (if applicable)
The Brain Modulation Lab (Department of Neurosurgery, Massachusetts General Hospital) is a human systems neuroscience lab that studies brain
electrophysiology and behavior in patients undergoing surgery for epilepsy,
movement disorders, and psychiatric disease. The goal of our work is to facilitate the development and optimization of electrical and biological brain modulation therapies by addressing critical gaps in our understanding of human brainfunction.
We are looking for a motivated, detail-oriented, and talented individual to
coordinate a clinical research study of deep brain stimulation (DBS) for
Parkinson’s disease and to assist in the acquisition and management of neural
and behavioral data. The study focuses on Evoked Resonant Neural Activity
(ERNA), a brain signal elicited by electrical stimulation and recorded directly
from the DBS electrode. We record ERNA during DBS implantation surgery and
measure patients’ motor responses to stimulation at postoperative programming visits. The long-term goal is to make DBS surgery and programming faster and more widely available. The Clinical Research Coordinator will work under the supervision of the PIs (Alan Bush, PhD, and Mark Richardson, MD, PhD), in close collaboration with Todd Herrington, MD, PhD (Director of the MGH Deep Brain Stimulation Program), Pranav Nanda, MD, MPhil (Co-Director, Brain Modulation Lab) and other research scientists, and will routinely interact with patients.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
● Screen and recruit patients with Parkinson’s disease who are scheduled
for DBS surgery, working with the neurosurgery and neurology clinical
teams, and assist with the informed consent process.
● Coordinate research activities around clinical care, including surgery
dates, postoperative imaging, and programming visits.
● Assist with experiment set-up, execution, take-down, and data collection
in the operating room during DBS electrode implantation surgery, in
both awake and asleep (general anesthesia) procedures. This include
preparing research, recording equipment, and cables, and coordinating
with the surgical, anesthesia, and nursing teams.
● Set up and run quantitative motor assessments during postoperative
DBS programming visits, following study procedures. These include
video recordings, wearable sensors (surface EMG and accelerometers),
and audio.
● Administer cognitive and behavioral tasks to inpatients undergoing
intracranial monitoring for epilepsy treatment. Task administration on
weekends may be required, but will be done on a rotating schedule.
● Access patient charts to derive data related to DBS surgery and
programming, collect patient outcome measures following surgery, and
develop and perform procedures for tracking surgical outcomes.
● Consolidate, de-identify, and manage intracranial, imaging, video, and
wearable-sensor data using Excel, MATLAB, Python, and standard
neurological data processing software. Improve, debug, and modify pre-
processing pipelines.
● Document and maintain specific protocol information and
communications according to established guidelines.
● Document research activities and maintain research databases (e.g.,
REDCap).
● Maintain confidential patient files, including all correspondence,
protected health information (PHI), raw data, and follow-up status of
research study participants.
● Assist with drafting essential study documents and preparing materials
for IRB submissions.
● Attend and prepare summaries of relevant clinical planning and lab
meetings.
● Purchase equipment and supplies and maintain communications with suppliers.
