Description
Remote working policy: Fully remote from eligible European countries
Employment type: Full-time B2B contract
Salary guide: Approximately €120,000–€140,000+ per year, depending on experience, plus equity options. Final contractual currency and package will be confirmed.
Work remotely without relocating, while taking ownership of core backend systems in an international AI startup.
About the company:
Our client (USA company) builds AI software that helps insurance professionals make better decisions. Its products are already in production with leading insurers, turning fragmented information into useful insights within real business workflows.
The company’s ambition extends across underwriting, claims, pricing and operations. You’ll join a venture-backed team with experience from major technology and financial services businesses, building the infrastructure that supports this growth.
About the role:
If you enjoy designing systems, working through difficult architectural decisions and staying hands-on with the code, this role gives you substantial scope to do all three—from your remote workspace.
You’ll join the Core Backend team, building services, data models, pipelines and evaluation systems at the centre of the product. Your work will help make information more complete, decisions more explainable and the platform more reliable.
This is a Staff-level individual contributor role. You’ll own substantial engineering problems, influence technical direction and see projects through to production, with the independence to investigate, experiment and make informed decisions.
What you’ll get to build and influence:
- Design backend services and data models for business-critical AI products
- Build pipelines that turn fragmented, high-value data into usable information
- Develop asynchronous workflows and cloud infrastructure using AWS
- Improve reliability, performance and scalability across core systems
- Build evaluation and feedback loops that help measure and improve product outcomes
- Make architectural trade-offs and guide projects from problem definition through deployment
- Work closely with engineering and product colleagues to connect technical decisions to customer needs
- Investigate unfamiliar problems, test approaches and use evidence to guide improvements
What we’re looking for:
- Typically 8+ years of professional software engineering experience; exceptional candidates with 5+ years and demonstrated Staff-level impact may also be considered
- Current, hands-on backend engineering experience
- A track record of owning complex production systems with significant traffic, data volume or processing demands
- Strong system design, debugging and problem-solving fundamentals
- Professional Python experience, whether as your main language or alongside languages such as Go, Java, Kotlin or Rust
- Experience with cloud infrastructure, asynchronous workflows and AWS services such as Lambda or EC2
- Strong relational database skills, ideally PostgreSQL
- Experience working in a startup environment
- The ability to lead ambiguous technical projects with minimal oversight
- Clear communication about decisions, progress, risks and blockers
Hands-on experience with production LLM applications, AI agents, retrieval-augmented generation or distributed systems would be particularly valuable.
Why join our client?
- Work fully remotely from an eligible European location
- Own core systems rather than a narrow stream of implementation tasks
- Combine backend architecture with practical AI product development
- Receive a substantial equity options package
- Work with an international engineering team on products already used by insurers
- Grow through demonstrated technical contribution and customer impact
Benefits:
- Competitive annual compensation plus equity options
- 20 days of paid time off annually under the B2B contract
- Global team offsites
- Healthy living or gym stipend
- Mobile phone bill stipend
- Continuing education credits
Working arrangements:
This is a full-time remote opportunity under a B2B contract. You must be based in an eligible country and able to provide services through a locally established business entity.
Existing work authorisation is required. Visa sponsorship is not available. Country eligibility will be confirmed during screening.
