Description
About the role
We're looking for a Chief of Staff to join us in San Francisco.
This role is ideal for future founders and for people with high attention to detail and punctuality. A background in consulting plus a sharp eye for detail is especially valuable here.
What you'll do
You'll be working directly with the CEO to drive the highest priority initiatives within the company:
- Prospecting key accounts and establishing relationships with leaders. Come up with creative email sequences, write the copy, build the lists, launch the campaigns, and iterate on reply rates. Help the CEO scale founder-led outreach.
- Organizing executive dinners in different cities. Pick the guest list, invite executives, book venues, and run the logistics so every dinner builds real relationships with buyers.
- Driving enterprise pilots to ensure adoption and conversion. Jump into customer threads, follow-ups, and account management so pilots turn into customers.
- Assisting with investor relations. Draft investor updates, keep metrics and materials current, and help prep for investor meetings.
- Running day to day operations and admin work. Payroll, expenses, vendor management, calendar, and recruiting logistics, with low ego.
- Writing and refining founder-led content. Draft and tighten LinkedIn and X posts so they sound like the CEO and go out on time.
- Helping run launches, fundraise announcements, and in-person events. Plan the timeline, coordinate the moving pieces, and make sure every launch and event lands.
This is a great opportunity to get exposure to every aspect of an early stage startup. You'll get exposure to enterprise sales, customer success, hiring, marketing, fundraising, and more.
Why this role exists
We're a team of 10. Right now a lot of what moves Surface forward runs through the CEO: outbound, founder posts, customer follow-ups, investor updates, and ops. We need someone who takes real ownership of that work so it ships faster, and better.
Your first 90 days
- 30 days: You've taken over the CEO's day-to-day admin and ops, launched your first outbound email sequence, and started helping with founder-led posts.
- 60 days: You're running multiple outbound campaigns to key accounts, supporting at least one enterprise pilot, and you've drafted your first investor update.
- 90 days: You own founder-led outreach end to end, you've organized your first executive dinner, and you've helped run a launch, announcement, or in-person event.
What we're looking for
- Great writer. Clear, concrete, no fluff. You can match someone else's voice.
- High attention to detail and punctuality. Nothing slips, and you're on time, every time.
- Consulting background preferred. About 2 years in consulting or banking is ideal. Strong new grads who already work like that are welcome.
- Low ego, high output. You're happy doing admin and ops when that's what unblocks the company.
- Future founder energy. You want to learn how a company is built from the inside and you go find the next high-leverage thing without being asked.
- In person in SF. Based in the Bay Area and in our SF office 5 days a week.
How to apply
With your application, include one email sequence you've written (or a 3-email cold sequence pitching Surface to a VP of Sales or Marketing at a B2B company), plus a few lines on why this role.
