Description
The Senior Underwriting Manager leads a team of Loss Sensitive Primary Casualty Underwriters serving retail-market customers. This role is accountable for the team’s underwriting performance, talent management, portfolio results, and execution of the business strategy. The manager oversees the attraction, development, compensation, performance management, and engagement of team members while promoting disciplined, data-driven underwriting across a complex loss sensitive casualty portfolio.
The role requires strong technical expertise in primary casualty, loss sensitive structures, and retail distribution, along with the ability to build trusted relationships with retail brokers, agents, clients, internal partners, and other market stakeholders. The Senior Underwriting Manager may contribute to business planning, portfolio strategy, product development, and market-facing initiatives for the assigned business area.
- Lead and develop a team of Loss Sensitive Primary Casualty Underwriters serving retail-market customers, with accountability for talent attraction, engagement, compensation, performance management, and succession planning.
- Drive underwriting excellence across the portfolio by reinforcing disciplined risk selection, pricing adequacy, exposure analysis, terms and conditions, and compliance with underwriting authority.
- Communicate and execute underwriting strategy, including risk appetite, target industries, portfolio priorities, broker engagement, profitability objectives, and risk-adjusted growth.
- Own the performance of all or part of the retail loss sensitive casualty portfolio, including profitability, rate adequacy, retention, new business, premium, exposure quality, and portfolio concentration.
- Provide senior technical guidance on complex primary casualty risks and loss sensitive structures, including large deductibles, retrospective programs, collateral requirements, collateral alternatives, and significant loss experience.
- Serve as a point of escalation for challenging underwriting decisions, exceptions to guidelines, large loss sensitive opportunities, distressed risks, and unusual program structures.
Qualifications
Qualifications:
- Degree in Business or equivalent typically required
- A minimum of 10 years progressive underwriting experience or equivalent expected, including a minimum of 2 years of proven underwriting management experience, preferred
- CPCU or professional insurance designation preferred
- Proven analytical ability to evaluate high impact underwriting risks within scope of responsibility
- Demonstrated ability to communicate complex analyses and information
- Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills in dealing with internal and external partners required
