We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Mechanical Designer / Detailer to support engineering and manufacturing operations within our fabrication facility at Thermo Vac. This position is responsible for developing complete shop drawing packages from 3D models, customer-supplied drawings, specifications, and Point Cloud/3D Scan Data.
The Mechanical Designer / Detailer works closely with Engineering and Manufacturing to ensure drawings meet design requirements, manufacturing capabilities, and company standards. The position includes both office and shop-floor interaction and requires a strong understanding of how designs translate into finished fabricated products.
Requirements
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop complete 2D shop drawing packages from 3D models, customer drawings, and engineering documentation.
- Create bills of material, component details, assembly drawings, cut sheets, and work instructions.
- Create and modify 3D models using Autodesk Inventor, with an emphasis on sheet metal and fabricated components.
- Create flat patterns and manufacturing data for laser cutting, forming, machining, and other fabrication processes.
- Review and interpret customer CAD data, drawings, specifications, and technical documentation.
- Work with Engineering and Production to ensure designs are accurate, manufacturable, and meet shop standards.
- Communicate with shop personnel to clarify drawings and assist with fabrication and assembly questions.
- Use measurement tools and reverse-engineering techniques to develop drawings and models from existing parts and assemblies.
- Maintain accurate CAD files and documentation in accordance with company standards.
- Support drawing revisions and continuous improvement initiatives.
Experience & Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Associate’s degree in mechanical design, drafting, engineering technology, or related field preferred.
- Previous experience in mechanical design, drafting, detailing, or a manufacturing environment required.
- Experience with Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD required.
- Candidates should be prepared to provide examples of previous work through a print or digital portfolio.
Required Qualifications:
- Proficiency in Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD, with an emphasis on sheet metal modeling and detailing.
- Ability to create complete shop drawing packages from 2D drawings and 3D models.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, weld symbols, and basic GD&T.
- Experience working with customer CAD data, including DWG and STEP files.
- Ability to convert STEP files for use in the design and detailing process.
- Understanding of common fabrication and manufacturing processes, including cutting, forming, welding, machining, assembly, and finishing.
- Ability to develop flat patterns for sheet and plate components.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including SharePoint, and common digital collaboration and file-management tools.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Advanced Autodesk Inventor experience, including sheet metal, shared styles, Content Center, file management, and shared environments.
- Experience with SolidWorks or other 3D CAD platforms.
- Experience designing or detailing fabricated steel equipment and assemblies.
- Knowledge of steel types, structural materials, and common machining processes.
- Experience with point-cloud data, 3D scanning, or reverse-engineering technologies.
- Experience with MRP/ERP systems; Epicor preferred.
- Familiarity with ASME drawing practices and standards
Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
- Combination of office and shop floor environments.
- Regular interaction with Engineering, Production, and shop personnel.
- Exposure to typical manufacturing conditions.
- May require walking through the shop floor to review parts, processes, or production requirements.
- Use of standard office equipment including computers, phones, printers, and copiers.
- Ability to work safely and effectively in a manufacturing environment.

Work Schedule:
- Status: Full-Time, On-Site – (Location: Oxford, MI)
- Standard Hours: Monday – Friday, 40 hours per week
- Shift: Day shift
- Overtime: May be required based on production schedules
- Travel: Occasional travel as needed
