Description

Volunteer Firefighters respond to fire calls and other emergency incidents to protect life and property; drive and operate pumping fire engines, aerial ladder trucks, rescue trucks, and similar fire, rescue, and related vehicles; participate in fire prevention; fire suppression, rescue, training, maintenance, and safety education activities; perform the required tasks at the scene of emergencies and other activities of the department.Drives equipment in responding to emergency calls in the suppression of fires, rescue, and hazardous materials assignments.

Assists in the suppression of fires and in the protection of life and property; performs rescue operations and administers first aid and CPR as necessary.

Performs preventive maintenance on and operates equipment. Maintains equipment in a constant state of readiness; inventories and maintains supplies and equipment; maintains stations; performs cleanup, overhaul, and salvage work; and verifies readiness for future alarms. Prepares reports and assists with fire inspections as requested.

Participates in basic and continuing training and instruction programs through individual study of technical firefighting, hazardous materials, rescue and emergency medical services and attendance at scheduled drills and classes.

Responds to all possible alarms while on duty; maintains grounds and fire station.

Must keep and maintain the necessary records and prepare reports and correspondence as required by the department for this position.

Performs related duties as assigned by superiors.Must be at least 21 years of age with High School diploma or GED.  Minimum two (2) years' experience as a certified firefighter on a career or volunteer department within the last four (4) years from date of application. Must be able to meet all certification requirements listed below. 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Must have a valid Colorado Driver's License with good driving record.  
Must have or obtain Basic Life Support CPR/AED certification within 4 months of membership appointment.
Must have current Colorado State Firefighter I and Hazmat Operations certifications or ability to obtain within 18 months of membership appointment.
Must have current Colorado State Emergency Medical Responder or above or ability to obtain within 18 months of membership appointment.
Current Emergency Medical Technician preferred.

 To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.

LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, interpret, and comprehend fire related guidelines, regulations, and training materials.  Ability to write reports, basic correspondence, and standard operating guidelines completely and accurately using acceptable grammar, punctuation and spelling. Demonstrates strong oral and written communication skills. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from supervisors, managers, and the general public. Effectively uses department radios through clear voice projection.  Must be able to understand and follow oral and written instructions and directions using the English language.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to act without direct supervision, operate independently, exercise good judgment, initiative, and integrity in all situations.

Applies information that has been provided to make prompt and effective decisions in both routine and non-routine situations. Must be able to analyze various problems, including varying emergencies, and develop a workable solution that fits within the policies and capabilities of the department. Must have the ability to learn new knowledge, skills, and abilities as required by the demands of the fire department and through the training program of the department.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to perform the tasks necessary to drive, board, and operate the fire department vehicles and equipment utilized by the Golden Fire Department. Ability to learn technical firefighting principles and techniques according to the standard operating guidelines of the department. Ability to safely operate and maintain fire, EMS, rescue and other fire department equipment. Must complete annual training requirements.

Must have the ability to learn how to deal with hazardous materials incidents and must be able to apply the minimum standards of training to actual incidents as necessary to successfully resolve an emergency incident.

Must establish and maintain cooperative relationships with department members, city employees, other agency members, and the public. Must operate individually and as a member of a team to successfully complete assignments as a Volunteer Firefighter of the department.

MATERIALS & EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED
All fire equipment and fire apparatus related to firefighting which includes but is not limited to fire hoses, high pressure air packs, fire extinguishers, ladders, saws, technical rescue equipment, various tools and other equipment specifically related to the fire service, rescue, EMS and Special Operations, as well as all assigned PPE. Must be able to lift and operate all equipment located on all fire apparatus.

General office equipment and computer programs related to the position.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by a volunteer to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.

Must be able to successfully complete the elements of the department's physical agility test and have the physical endurance and agility to complete the tasks necessary in the position.

Must be able to climb and perform the necessary tasks on ground or aerial ladders, as necessary, to complete firefighting, rescue, EMS, or other functions of the department.

Must be able to remove patients/victims from the position/location they are found, including the many and varied locations within the City of Golden and other locations as assigned, transport them to an ambulance using the equipment provided and, lift them into and out of an ambulance without aggravating the conditions of the patient or subjecting them to additional dangers of further injury or illness.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those a volunteer encounters while performing the essential functions of this position.

Volunteer Firefighters perform hazardous tasks requiring strenuous exertion during firefighting, rescue, and emergency situations while being exposed to conditions such as extreme heat, smoke, cramped and/or hazardous surroundings. Must be able to work extended hours doing strenuous repetitive drills in all areas of emergency service delivery.

Work is performed in all-weather including extreme weather conditions with temperatures below 32 degrees and temperatures in excess of 100 degrees for extended periods of time.

The potential to work in hazardous surroundings exists at all times which includes a variety of physical conditions such as proximity to moving mechanical equipment, electrical currents, working on ladders or in high places, confined spaces and hazardous materials.

Exposure to high noise levels requiring use of hearing protection. Potential for exposure to gases, chemicals, fumes, mists, dusts, and/or poor ventilation.

A wide variety of physical activities are inherent to this position including; lifting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, etc., as well as exerting a substantial amount of weight or force at any given time.
