The opportunity

The Analyst, Business Planning, Corporate Affairs will support Corporate Affairs by connecting finance processes, planning activities, reporting, data quality, AI-enabled process improvement, and third party spend operations.

This role will help modernize how Corporate Affairs captures, analyses, forecasts, and reports on legal spend, divisional priorities, and operational performance. The role will also provide reliable operational coverage for legal invoice processing, supporting continuity and flexibility within the Business Planning team.

The position is designed around three core areas: finance and planning integration, data and AI enablement, and legal invoice coverage.

Who you'll work with

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Business Planning, this role will be an integral part of a collegial and talented team within the Corporate Affairs Division.

The role will work closely with the Billing Coordinator / legal invoice operations function, Corporate Affairs lawyers and business partners, Finance, Technology, P&C, external counsel, and other internal stakeholders. The role will support Corporate Affairs’ ability to manage budgeting, accruals, third party spend reporting, operational data, and invoice coverage with accuracy, consistency, and appropriate confidentiality.

What you'll do

Finance, Budgeting and Planning Support

The analyst will help strengthen the connection between budgeting, forecasting, accruals, and divisional planning

  • Support the Business Planning team in coordinating and analyzing Corporate Affairs financial information for budgeting, planning, forecasting, and reporting purposes.
  • Assist with budget preparation, forecast inputs, variance analysis, and consolidation of financial information across Corporate Affairs cost centres.
  • Help prepare financial reporting inputs, summaries, dashboards, and analysis for senior leaders and business partners.
  • Support periodic reporting and commentary related to budgets, forecasts, accruals, financial performance, and divisional planning activities.
  • Assist with reconciling budget and forecast information with Finance systems and internal planning files.
  • Help identify trends, issues, or inconsistencies in financial data that may affect budgeting, forecasting, or reporting accuracy.
  • Support process improvements that make budgeting, forecasting, variance tracking, and financial reporting more consistent, timely, and reliable.
  • Work with the Business Planning team to ensure financial information is captured, organized, and presented in a way that supports planning, decision-making, and senior leadership reporting.

Data and AI Enablement

The analyst will support data quality, reporting, automation, and responsible use of approved AI tools to reduce manual effort and improve business insights.

  • Support data quality across invoice, third party spend, matter, accrual, budget, portco and reporting datasets.
  • Identify missing data, inconsistent tracking, duplicate records, and recurring data issues.
  • Assist with maintaining and improving Power BI dashboards, Excel reporting models, SharePoint Lists, and other Microsoft-based tools.
  • Support development of repeatable processes, templates, trackers, documentation, and workflow improvements.
  • Use approved AI tools responsibly to support first-draft reporting commentary, invoice narrative summaries, matter trend analysis, issue identification, process documentation, and data review.
  • Help test, validate, and refine AI-generated outputs to ensure accuracy, confidentiality, and business relevance.
  • Support automation opportunities that reduce repetitive manual work, improve consistency, and strengthen controls.
  • Work with the Business Planning team to move recurring work from manual coordination toward more repeatable, automated, and scalable processes.
  • Contribute to the long-term goal of increasing automation across repeatable, rules-based, and data-intensive activities.

AI–Enabled Legal Invoice Operations and Coverage

The analyst will provide reliable support and coverage for legal invoice operations while helping the team use approved AI tools to better identify, capture, and organize valuable information contained in legal invoices. This includes supporting the extraction and review of invoice-related information such as external counsel details, hours billed, type of work performed, billing narratives, matter information, discounts, and other data points that support third party spend reporting and analysis.

  • Support the intake, review, tracking, coding, and processing of highly confidential and privileged legal invoices.
  • Use approved AI tools and established review processes to help identify, summarize, and capture useful invoice information that can support reporting, matter analysis, external counsel insights, and third party spend visibility.
  • Actively support legal invoice operations as an ongoing part of the role, including invoice intake, review, tracking, follow-up, and processing, with additional support during high-volume periods, absences, quarter-end, mid-year, and year-end cycles.
  • Review invoice details for completeness, accuracy, appropriate matter references, cost centres, GL coding, billing classifications, currency treatment, and supporting information.
  • Support tracking and validation of external counsel discounts, direct and indirect billing classifications, matter numbers, accruals, and invoice status.
  • Coordinate with Finance, Accounts Payable, internal legal teams, investment teams, tax, compliance, and external counsel to resolve invoice questions or missing information.
  • Assist with accrual collection and follow-up with law firms and internal stakeholders during financial reporting cycles.
  • Maintain accurate records of invoice processing status, outstanding items, issues, and follow-ups.
  • Support periodic invoice reviews, reporting requests, audits, and reconciliations.
  • Support monitoring of external counsel spend, preferred counsel reporting, matter trends, discount activity, and other third party spend insights.
  • Handle sensitive legal and financial information with a high degree of discretion, judgment, and confidentiality, including when using approved AI tools or automation-enabled processes.

What you'll need

  •  Post-secondary degree or diploma in business, finance, accounting, data analytics or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 2 to 4 years of relevant experience in finance operations, billing, legal operations, business planning, analytics, reporting, or a similar environment.
  • Strong digital fluency and comfort learning new systems, tools, processes, and AI-enabled ways of working.
  • Experience working with invoices, budgets, accruals, financial reporting, legal spend, or operational data would be an asset.
  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy, organization, and follow-through.
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines and competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Curiosity and initiative to identify opportunities to improve processes, reduce manual effort, and use technology more effectively.
  • Working knowledge of budgeting, forecasting, accruals, variance analysis, invoice processing, financial coding, and reporting concepts.
  • Strong Excel skills, including formulas, pivot tables, data validation, reconciliations, and large data reviews.
  • Working knowledge of Power BI, SharePoint, Microsoft Lists, Forms, Word, PowerPoint, and other Microsoft 365 applications.
  • Familiarity with Dynamics 365, finance systems, legal billing systems, or matter management systems would be an asset.
  • Understanding of third party spend operations, external counsel billing, matter tracking, discounts, currencies, and confidential legal information would be an asset.
  • Working knowledge of approved AI tools and ability to apply them responsibly to improve efficiency, documentation, analysis, and reporting.
  • Understanding of data quality, process improvement, workflow design, and reporting controls.
  • Experience supporting financial operations, budgeting, reporting, billing coordination, or invoice processing activities.
  • Experience reviewing, reconciling, and validating data across spreadsheets, systems, or reports.
  • Experience preparing reports, summaries, dashboards, or financial analysis for business partners or senior stakeholders.
  • Experience working with confidential or sensitive information.
  • Experience supporting process improvement, automation, reporting enhancements, or workflow documentation.
  • Experience using Excel and Power BI to support analysis and reporting.
