Secondary School Diploma

Cook Certificate – Level 1 or 2 (Red Seal preferred)

Public Health Food Handlers Certificate

Technical Competencies

Basic understanding of therapeutic diets

Ability to read and follow standardized recipes and production sheets.

Knowledge of H.A.C.C. P.

Solid understanding of quantity cooking methods, procedures and portion control Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English

Experience

Previous cooking experience in an institutionalized setting preferably long-term care

paring Meals

  • adhering to legislative requirements for safe preparation of food
  • meal, nourishment, and supplement preparation and presentation

Supervision

  • directs dietary aids in basic food preparation procedures and serving activities.
  • performance management for any direct reports
  • training dietary aids (as required)

Environmental Management

  • adhering to legislative requirements (e.g., Public Health, WHMIS, Provincial licensing body)
  • cleaning, disinfecting, ensuring hygiene and adherence to infection control standards

Cost Management

  • adhering to legislative requirements
  • monitoring food costs
  • ensuring purchases of food and supplies fit within the budgetary guidelines.
  • managing waste
  • generating meal revenue from staff meals

Public Relations

  • interacting with residents, families, staff and stakeholders

  • resolving food-related issues from residents’ council

Occupational Health and Safety Accountabilities

  • Carry out all assigned duties in compliance with applicable Occupational Health and Safety legislation and Company policy.
  • Follow safe work practices as directed by their supervisor and as required by the applicable Occupational Health and Safety legislation.
  • Participate in all required occupational health and safety training.
  • Use appropriate equipment and wear personal protective equipment or clothing, as required by Extendicare/ParaMed.
  • Report any known or identified health and safety hazards or violations to their supervisor.
  • Refrain from any conduct that puts themselves, workers, contractors or others at risk.

  • Respect and preserve the privacy, confidentiality and security of health care and employee information at all times.  Violations of this statement include, but are not limited to:
  • accessing confidential information that is not within the scope of the individuals duties.
  • misusing, disclosing without proper authorization, or altering confidential information.
