Sompo has a unique opportunity for an Underwriter in our International Casualty Reinsurance Underwriting team. 

The Underwriter will seek to develop the International Casualty line of business with a particular focus to include London Market, in addition to other territories, through Aspen’s Lloyds Syndicate, underwriting risks in accordance with the business plan and within delegated underwriting authority.

What you’ll be doing: 

• Underwrites and manages insurance risks in line with the business plan, delegated underwriting authority, legal/regulatory requirements, reinsurance requirements, underwriting standards, and good practice to meet objectives while minimizing risk. 

• Monitors portfolio performance and underwriting activity by supporting portfolio reviews, producing management information reports, tracking progress against objectives, and ensuring underwriting data, aggregate exposures, and DUA-related records are accurate and timely. 

• Provides technical expertise and team support by identifying issues and opportunities, contributing to aggregate management and peer review processes, acting as a referral point for specific tasks or in the senior underwriter’s absence, and supporting team knowledge development. 

• Contributes to strategy, planning, and prioritization by advising on plan developments, supporting operational team plans aligned to wider business strategy, and managing own priorities to achieve functional objectives. 

• Maintains strong underwriting governance and documentation by ensuring underwriting files and related issues are logically organized, accessible, clearly documented, and compliant with required processes and procedures. 

• Builds stakeholder relationships and market awareness by developing relationships with customers, brokers, business partners, and colleagues; responding to stakeholder requests within service standards; and applying awareness of market dynamics and cycles to support business performance. 

What you’ll bring: 

• Extensive underwriting knowledge in the relevant class/portfolio, including class-specific underwriting, reinsurance, market conditions, risk profiling, pricing tools, and loss models. 

• Strong understanding of underwriting systems, processes, procedures, EPAs, and applicable legal/regulatory requirements, including FCA and Lloyd’s regulations. 

• Strong communication, interpersonal, customer orientation, negotiation, collaboration, and people management skills, with the ability to engage and lead a team. 

• Highly organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to work independently, plan effectively, manage conflicting priorities, meet deadlines, and conduct investigations. 

• Proficient in MS Office and departmental software, with the ability to produce MI and detailed reports, analyze data, and apply insights to decision-making. 

• Broad experience in a specialized/complex underwriting environment, including resolving complex underwriting queries, maintaining strong customer/broker relationships, and holding or working toward relevant professional qualifications such as ACII or equivalent.
