THE POSITION:

The Tustin Parks and Recreation Department is looking to hire individuals who want to use their talents and creativity to serve their community at various parks, programs, events and facilities for the part-time position of Recreation Leader I.

Given that this is a part-time, at-will, non-benefitted position, hours will be limited to less than 1,000 hours per fiscal year. Employees may be assigned to work year-round or seasonally and hours worked may vary significantly from week to week.

THE RECRUITMENT PROCESS:

Application materials will be carefully reviewed to identify candidates who meet the minimum qualifications for this position. Those who meet the minimum qualifications for the position will be invited to participate in a one-way recorded video interview. Those who pass the one-way recorded video interview will earn placement on the eligible list, which may be used for current and future vacancies in the job classification.

This recruitment is conducted on a continuous basis to meet the needs of the City as vacancies occur and may close at any time.

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

• Assists with the delivery of Parks and Recreation programs, services, and special events; provides support to staff and contract instructors

• Leads, conducts, and oversees program activities including games, sports, crafts, dances, and luncheons

• Explains and enforces facility regulations, policies, and procedures; positively represents the City in interactions with participants and the public

• Assists with opening and closing facilities; assists with setting up and taking down furniture, materials, and equipment

• Practices safe work methods and makes appropriate use of safety equipment as required; notifies supervisor of observed safety concerns, serious accidents or emergencies; may administer emergency first aid

• Assists with registering participants in classes and sports programs and booking facilities for events; collects and processes fees; maintains files and records of transactions and schedules

• Provides assistance to facility patrons and the general public; answers questions regarding facility usage and program, activity, and event specifics; responds to requests for human services needs and refers patrons to appropriate resources

• Resolves program issues within established guidelines; makes suggestions for program improvements

A combination of education, experience, and training that has provided the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities is required for entry into the classification.  A typical combination includes:

Education and/or Experience:

Recreation Leader I: None required. Completion of some high school courses is desirable. Paid or volunteer experience working with children or others in a recreational setting is desirable.

Licenses and/or Certificates:

Recreation Leader I: Valid First Aid and CPR certificates are required within six (6) months of employment.

Special Requirements:

Must be at least sixteen (16) years of age by the first day of employment. Some positions may require individuals to be at least eighteen (18) years of age by the first day of employment. Satisfactory results from a background investigation, physical examination and administrative screening. May be required to work extended or irregular hours which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays. Bilingual skills are desirable.
