Construction Site Manager

Department: DevCon

Employment Type: Permanent - Full Time

Location: UK - Remote

Description

Your Mission

The Construction Site Manager plays a pivotal role in delivering the safe, efficient, and high-quality construction of a 200MW/800MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project. The position is focused on overseeing all site-based activities, ensuring works are executed in line with design specifications, programme requirements, and construction best practices, while effectively managing contractors, resources, and interfaces on site.

This role is central to driving construction performance, maintaining strict control of health and safety, quality, and productivity throughout all phases of the build. It supports the successful progression from early works through to commissioning by proactively managing site risks, resolving technical and logistical challenges, and fostering a disciplined, delivery-focused culture that ensures the project is completed on time, within budget, and to the highest construction standards.

Key Responsibilities

What you’ll be doing

As a Construction Site Manager, you will take full responsibility for the day to day management of site activities, ensuring all works are delivered safely, efficiently, and in line with the project programme and technical requirements. You will work directly with the Project Management Team maintaining clear oversight of progress, productivity, and quality across all construction phases.

This is a broad and varied role with the opportunity to have massive impact. Key responsibilities include:
  • Take full responsibility for the day-to-day management of all on-site construction activities;
  • Enforce high standards of health, safety, and environmental compliance across site;
  • Act as the primary on-site point of contact for project managers, engineers, and stakeholders;
  • Liaise and support the Principal Contractor (PC) to coordinate and supervise contractors, subcontractors, and trades across multiple work fronts ensuring alignment with Employers Requirements and contractual commitments;
  • Support and oversee PC ensuring that planning and sequence on site works ensure efficient delivery in line with the project programmes;
  • Collaborate and support PC for the effective management of site logistics, including access, materials, plant, and resource allocation;
  • Oversee civil, electrical, and mechanical installations, ensuring alignment with design specifications and contractual obligations;
  • Monitor progress against key milestones and take proactive action to mitigate delays;
  • Lead site briefings, watching briefs (as required), inspections, and audits, addressing risks and non-conformances promptly;
  • Ensure quality control processes are followed, including inspections, testing, and documentation;
  • Facilitate clear communication between all parties to resolve technical and logistical issues;
  • Track and report on site performance, productivity, and programme status;
  • Drive a culture of accountability, teamwork, and high performance on site;
  • Ensure the project is delivered safely, on time, within budget, and to the highest construction standards

Key Accountabilities

QHSE Leadership
  • Lead a “safety-first” culture and verify compliance with CDM arrangements, site rules, RAMS, Safe Systems of Work (SSOW) and Permits-to-Work (PTW).
  • Oversee high-risk activities: lifting plans (containers/transformers), excavations/temporary works, electrical isolations, switching coordination, hot works, working at height, confined spaces (this is not an exhaustive list).
  • Ensure robust controls for BESS hazards: thermal runaway mitigation, separation/segregation, ventilation and gas detection, fire strategy implementation, emergency response plan and drills, and site access protocols for containers.
  • Maintain environmental and community controls: noise/dust, traffic management, waste, spill prevention, drainage protection and planning condition compliance.

Construction Oversight on both BOP and BESS
  • Verify work is delivered to IFC drawings/specs, ITPs, hold points, and OEM installation requirements.
  • Focus on critical quality risks:
    • BOP: civils tolerances, duct banks, cable pulls/bending radii, gland/termination workmanship, earthing continuity/resistance, P&C wiring/labels, enclosure ingress protection.
    • BESS: container placement/tolerances, HVAC commissioning prerequisites, fire system installation integrity, comms/SCADA networks, auxiliary power reliability, OEM checklists completion.
  • Raise/track NCRs and drive corrective actions to reduce rework and protect schedule.

Programme, Progress & Interface Control
  • Track daily progress against schedule and 2 week lookaheads across both BESS and BOP workflows
  • Identify constraints early and propose mitigations.
  • Attend coordination meetings and ensure decisions/actions are closed out with clear owners and dates.
Contractor Governance and Change Control
  • Act as Fields focal point for site decisions within delegated authority; escalate risks and commercial impacts promptly.
  • Manage interfaces between EPC, BESS OEM, BOP contractors, TO, commissioning teams, and third parties (telecoms, security, metering).
  • Support change control by spotting scope deviations and ensuring approvals are documented and implemented correctly.

  • Support pre-commissioning and commissioning activities: walkdowns, test witnessing, SAT coordination, and system integration checks (BESS–EMS–SCADA–P&C).
  • Coordinate energisation readiness packs: switching plans, competencies, documentation completeness, emergency arrangements, and contingency plans.
  • Drive handover deliverables: punch list closure evidence, test packs, as-builts, O&M manuals, spares/warranties, training records, and completion dossiers for Operations.

  • Maintain a tidy, audit-ready site; host visits and manage close-out of findings.
  • Support landowner/community engagement and ensure issues are logged, responded to, and closed out.
  • Ensure compliance with planning conditions and local constraints.

Key Deliverables
  • Daily site diary and weekly progress/QHSE report (with photos).
  • Integrated BESS/BOP interface log, risk register inputs, and constraints tracker
  • Punch list / snag register (prioritised and evidenced close-out)
