Department of Public Safety Standards and Training  

Emergency Vehicle Operations (EVO) Instructor (Public Safety Training Specialist) – Multiple Part Time Positions Available  

This recruitment is for multiple, part-time positions located in Salem, OR (4190 Aumsville Hwy SE) and is not represented by a union. This recruitment will be used to establish a list of qualified applicants and may be used to fill future vacancies.

In this position you will be working in DPSST’s Skills Training Section delivering pre-designed curriculum within the Emergency Vehicle Operations (EVO) program.

About DPSST:  

The Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) oversees the development of professional standards and the delivery of quality training for law enforcement officers, corrections officers, parole and probation officers, firefighters, telecommunicators, and emergency medical dispatchers. DPSST is also the regulatory agency that enforces employment and training standards for the above listed public safety disciplines and licenses proprietary security managers, security contractors and officers, polygraph examiners, and private investigators.

  • Instructors who live more than 75 miles from the Academy and teach more than one day per week will be reimbursed mileage for one round trip in addition to lodging and meal expenses. Exceptions may be authorized with prior supervisory approval.  

Minimum Qualifications:  

Three (3) years of professional level experience related to the providing Emergency Vehicle Operations instruction and/or based on ORS 181.610 through 181.690. Typically, this experience is in the area of public safety (law enforcement officers, adult and youth corrections officers, parole and probation officers, fire service professionals, telecommunicators, and emergency medical dispatchers). Experience must have included delivering structured training sessions or on-the-job training.

  • Highly motivated individual with the ability to work independently and within a team environment. 
  • Experience conducting police pursuit driving within the last 5 years. 
  • Strong operational experience applying adult learning theory. 
  • Experience as a coach or mentor. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to navigate multiple team dynamics. 
  • Experience delivering structured training related to law enforcement disciplines.

Preferred Qualifications: 

Three (3) years as a full-time certified public safety officer who has successfully completed the Oregon EVOIC.
