The position will run from January 4, 2027, to June 25, 2027. End dates are flexible within the time frame but with a maximum 6-month allotment. Preference will be given to applicants for a full 6-month commitment.
What We Can Achieve Together:
The Chattahoochee Fall Line (CFL) Senior Burn Crew Member oversees a team of 3 Fire Management Technicians in wildland fire activities as directed by a Burn Boss or other command position and participates in preparing fire lines, participating in prescribed fire operations (including serving in fireline leadership roles), maintaining equipment, post-burn monitoring, and other tasks. They may perform other preserve management duties when conditions are not conducive to prescribed fire.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Senior Burn Crew Member is responsible for managing the seasonal fire crew’s shared housing, ensuring the residence is properly maintained, modeling respectful community living standards, and identifying and addressing interpersonal conflicts promptly to support a positive crew experience.
As part of the SBCM’s ongoing professional development, they will be responsible for keeping abreast of new burn techniques and equipment to enhance skills and maintain/grow professional fire certification credentials. In addition, they shall work to build and maintain relationships in the professional fire community and in the local community where the Conservancy works. This may include participation in wild land fire suppression activities in partnership with other non-profits, local fire departments, and local, state and federal agencies, tribal or indigenous, either as a TNC employee, or as a volunteer or short-term employee of the partner entity (such as an Administratively determined, short term federal employee).
RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE
Function as both leader and member of a work team, in a high-stress team environment.
Convey work instructions to subordinates.
Works under close supervision of the Burn Boss during fire operations.
Perform other land management duties when conditions are not conducive to prescribed fire.
Ability to perform heavy physical work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.
Assist with administrative tasks necessary for documenting work activities as requested by the supervisor.
Must have a valid driver’s license and good driving record

What You’ll Bring:
High school diploma and at least 12 months as an active-duty Firefighter Type 2, Burn Crew Member, or similar primarily fire agency position.
Must be qualified as a Firefighter Type 2 (FFT2), including Introduction to ICS (I-100), Human Factors on the Fire line (L-180), Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior (S-190), Firefighting Training (S-130).See https://www.tncfiremanual.org/FIrefighter.htm
Must achieve physical fitness standards as set by local Fire Manager and the TNC Fire Manual. Must pass the arduous work capacity test (walk 3 miles in 45 minutes carrying 45 lbs.).
Experience operating and maintaining various types of equipment.
Basic First Aid and CPR training
Desired Qualifications
Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
Experience on at least 60 prescribed burn operations, preferably in the longleaf pine range.
Completed S-131 (Firefighter Type 1) course and an open FFT1 taskbook.
Ability and willingness to work in a team environment, follow directions, and receive constructive feedback from colleagues.
Experience supervising staff or volunteers, including conflict management skills.
Ability to evaluate inputs in a rapidly changing work environment and make decisions that affect the safety and work of firefighters within a squad.
Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications, Field Maps, and GPS navigation systems.
Completion of Wildland Fire Chain Saws (S-212).
Training as a Wilderness First Responder, Emergency Medical Technician, or other form of higher medical training.
This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with TNC’s Auto Safety Program. Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned/leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered "high risk drivers." Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which may include a review of the prospective employee's motor vehicle record.
Salary & Housing Information :
The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $22.00-$26.50 hourly rate. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidate’s actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate's location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market, and not tied to USA pay or ranges. Your geographic location will be confirmed during the recruitment.
Housing with basic utilities will be provided in Marion County, Georgia, at no cost to the employee upon signing and agreeing to lease terms, and the employee must live in provided housing with Fire Management Technicians (3) to maximize the effectiveness of the crew, assist in managing potential interpersonal conflicts, and to provide a general security presence for TNC’s equipment.
