The Business Need & Role
BioMADE is establishing Defense and Industrial Base Services (DIBS) as a new business unit and is seeking a leader to establish and grow this offering in service of our mission. The DIBS business unit incorporates many existing programmatic capabilities at BioMADE along with a vision for capabilities that BioMADE could offer to address latent demand aligned to the organization’s mission. This business unit will provide services to the Federal Government leveraging the public-private partnership and commercial entities to support the growth and maturation of bioindustrial manufacturing in the U.S.

The DIBS business unit incorporates many existing programmatic capabilities at BioMADE along with a vision for capabilities that BioMADE could offer to address latent demand aligned to the organization’s mission. This business unit will provide services to the Federal Government leveraging the public-private partnership and commercial entities to support the growth and maturation of bioindustrial manufacturing in the U.S.
The primary goals for this business unit are to better connect demand from the Government for bio-based products with offerings from BioMADE members, which the team will accomplish by providing advisory services and developing programs to drive bioindustrial product and technology transitions from private industry into defense capabilities for the U.S. Government. This business unit will also be responsible for developing and maintaining service offerings for BioMADE members that sustain and support our membership ecosystem.
The DIBS leader is responsible for developing the strategy, driving growth, leading delivery, and achieving financial targets for the DIBS business unit. Reporting to the CEO, this leader is a member of BioMADE’s executive team and leads a multidisciplinary organization that works with BioMADE member organizations and serves government and commercial customers.
The position calls for a business leader who can operate effectively in a technically complex environment and work effectively with BioMADE’s industrial ecosystem.
Key Responsibilities
Lead DIBS
- Develop and execute the DIBS strategy, business plans, and operating priorities in alignment with BioMADE’s strategy and mission.
- Drive the business and financial performance of DIBS, including revenue growth, operating performance, and resource allocation.
- Lead the DIBS organization and its leadership team, with responsibility for organizational design, staffing priorities, performance expectations, and day-to-day operating decisions.
- Contribute to BioMADE-wide strategy and decisions as a member of the executive team and work effectively across BioMADE.
Grow the Business and Serve Government and Commercial Customers
- Understand customer needs and translate them into relevant services and funded work. Build a strong pipeline of federal work while pursuing commercial opportunities that align with BioMADE’s mission and capabilities.
- Build trusted relationships with government and commercial customers. Lead DIBS customer relationships at the appropriate level and represent BioMADE externally.
- Lead DIBS business development and capture, including proposals and pricing.
- Oversee delivery across the DIBS portfolio, with accountability for customer commitments, financial performance, and quality.
Direct the Portfolio and Deliver Mission Impact
- Lead project portfolio planning, quality assurance, and program evaluation, working with the CEO, executive team, members, customers, and funding partners as appropriate.
- Leverage the BioMADE Pilot Plant Network (PPN), in close partnership with the PPN Business leader, to mature promising product technologies toward manufacturing and adoption.
- Oversee BioMADE’s membership and broader ecosystem activities, including partnerships and workforce development, to create value for members and partners and strengthen the domestic industrial base.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
DIBS works extensively with the U.S. government, particularly in support of national security, defense needs, and industrial-base priorities. Experience serving federal or defense customers is strongly preferred. BioMADE will also consider accomplished leaders from other sectors who have demonstrated the ability to understand complex customer needs, build credibility quickly, and develop funded work.
Experience in industrial biotechnology, advanced manufacturing, or another technology-intensive sector would be valuable. Familiarity with technology transition, government contracting, or public-private partnerships is also desirable but not required.
We are looking for a leader who takes accountability for results, communicates clearly, and builds trust with teams and customers. The right candidate will bring strong business judgment and a commitment to BioMADE’s mission. They may bring deep technical expertise themselves or lead through strong technical leaders; in either case, they must be able to organize the unit around the technical capabilities needed for success.
BioMADE seeks an accomplished business leader with:
- Senior leadership experience in a customer-facing business, operating unit, or portfolio, with responsibility for strategy, growth, financial performance, and delivery.
- Formulate and execute financial strategies to achieve margin targets, revenue goals, and operational efficiencies.
- A track record of building durable customer relationships and converting customer needs into funded work, services, or partnerships.
- Experience with government acquisition, procurement, and/or financial assistance instruments including proposal development.
- Experience leading and developing high-performing multidisciplinary teams, developing senior leaders, and creating a culture of accountability and strong execution.
- Experience making portfolio and resource decisions in complex technical or regulated environments.
- The ability to lead effectively in a technically complex environment, engage credibly with technical experts, and use their expertise to inform business and portfolio decisions.
Additional Requirements
- Because this position requires eligibility for a U.S. government security clearance, U.S. citizenship is required. The successful candidate must be able to obtain and maintain the required clearance.
- Location: Minneapolis, MN or Emeryville, CA strongly preferred; remote considered.
