Why This Role Matters

As an Mechanical Design Professional Intern in the Industrial Manufacturing Market you’ll play a key role in supporting the firm and shaping projects that make a difference—from concept through completion. You’ll collaborate with talented teammates, contribute your expertise, and help us deliver thoughtful, high-quality solutions for those we serve.

What You’ll Do

Internships offer invaluable hands-on experience to enhance your knowledge and understanding of your chosen career path. At Shive-Hattery, you’ll be treated as a full-time staff member with access to the same opportunities for learning and growth. You’ll work on actual client projects, where your contributions will directly impact both Shive-Hattery and the community. This experience will help expand your professional skill set and strengthen your portfolio, setting you up for future success.

As an intern, you will be paired with a mid-to-senior level employee who will serve as your mentor. This mentor/mentee relationship is designed to foster a supportive environment where you can candidly discuss your career goals and aspirations. Our one-on-one informal mentoring approach fosters the development of professional relationships that complement your academic learning, enriching your overall internship experience.

You will work on a variety of project types including Industrial, Commercial, and Health Care. These experiences will provide insights into the profession, collaborative teamwork, and serving the needs of our clients.

Requirements

• Currently attending an accredited engineering school for a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Architectural Engineering with an HVAC emphasis.
• Strong desire to design building HVAC, piping, & plumbing systems.
• Experience with 3D modeling software, Revit is desired. 
• Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel is desired.
• Collaborates with other team members in a professional environment and have good interpersonal skills.
• Communicates effectively, orally and in writing.
• Manages time and workload effectively which includes planning, organizing, and prioritizing with attention to engineering detail.

This position is primarily performed in an office environment and may require travel to project sites, other Shive-Hattery office locations or to meet with clients. A full clean driver’s license is required. The role involves sitting, standing, and working at a computer for extended periods. May also require lifting light to medium weight objects of up to 50 lbs., the wearing of PPE and navigating active construction sites.
