About This Opportunity

We are offering a part-time Program Coordinator position with the responsibility for developing outreach activities and strategies for The University of Queensland’s (UQ) Women in Engineering program. A key focus of the role is creating opportunities with secondary schools to inspire young women to explore engineering and technology study and career pathways.

This role significantly contributes to positioning UQ as the university of choice for women and will complement the initiatives and recruitment activities of the Faculty and broader UQ. The key objective is to increase the number of women enrolling in UQ’s engineering and technology programs and share the learnings from the program with Universities nationally to ultimately provide engineering dependent industries with increased participation of women in professional roles.

Key responsibilities will include:

You will have experience engaging and communicating with secondary school students, educators and school communities, and be passionate about encouraging young women to explore opportunities in engineering and technology.

Candidates may come from a range of backgrounds, including teaching, careers education, student recruitment, outreach, marketing, communications, engineering or related STEM fields. The primary focus is to connect with and educate women in years 8-12 to consider engineering as an attractive career option. You will work with the Manager, Marketing and Communication, staff within the Marketing and Communication team (Women in Engineering and Outreach), and key stakeholders across UQ to:

  • Encourage women in secondary school to think positively about study in engineering and technology at tertiary level by increasing their awareness of the variety of career options available, and through experiential opportunities.

  • Develop and implement effective strategies to engage with key target groups including prospective undergraduate students, high schools, government and industry sponsors, associations and student groups.

Specific duties will include:

  • Develop and coordinate resources for outreach activities such as workshops, presentations, industry experiences, seminars, and other events to engage with high school students.

  • Utilise current UQ students as Student Leaders who act as University ambassadors to support the outreach program.

  • Lead and serve as a member of the Women in Engineering Industry Advisory Board, research and present agenda items, write minutes, as appropriate.

  • Work with the Faculty’s Marketing and Communications Manager on opportunities for strategic communications and tailored resources for prospective women students.

  • Ensure that the marketing program’s activities complement those of the University.

  • Utilise the University CRM to coordinate activities across teams.

  • Analyse the implementation and achievements of programs managed within the position utilising market data to measure and report on the effectiveness of activities.

  • Provide advice to the Executive Dean, the Marketing and Communications Manager and the Associate Dean (Academic) on issues relating to supporting women within the Faculty’s student cohort.

About You

  • Degree qualifications in education, marketing, communications, engineering, STEM, or a related discipline, with at least 4 years subsequent relevant experience and/or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.

  • Experience engaging secondary school students through education, outreach, student recruitment, marketing, communication or related fields.

  • Understanding of engineering, technology and STEM career pathways desirable.

  • High level of interpersonal and verbal communication skills including public speaking and the ability to liaise with a wide range of individuals including senior staff of the University and external stakeholders.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively build, manage and maintain relationships with industry partners.

  • Confidence in presenting in front small and large audiences.

  • Strong client service focus, including the ability to relate easily and effectively to people from diverse backgrounds.

  • Flexibility to travel and work outside normal hours, when necessary, with appropriate compensation.

  • Ability to work autonomously and be self-motivated, combined with a high level of initiative, drive and enthusiasm.

  • Strong work ethics and willingness to go the extra mile to accomplish tasks in a fast-paced environment.

  • Sound knowledge of Australian higher education sector, university degree structures, and employability issues faced by students and graduates in domestic and international labour markets.
