Description

Turnaround & Restructuring - MBA Intern - beginning Summer 2027 for the MBA Class of 2028

At AlixPartners, we solve the most complex and critical challenges by moving quickly from analysis to action when it really matters; creating value that has a lasting impact on companies, their people, and the communities they serve. By understanding, respecting, and honoring the needs of our employees, clients, and communities, AlixPartners actively promotes an inclusive environment. We strongly believe in the value that diversity brings to our experiences and are committed to the perpetual enhancements of initiatives, policies, and practices. We hold ourselves accountable by providing the space for authenticity, growth, and equity for everyone.

AlixPartners has embraced a hybrid work model to provide flexibility and support our employees’ work-life integration.  Our hybrid model combines a mix of in-person (at client site or AlixPartners office) and remote working. Travel is part of this position, but the frequency may vary based on client, team, and individual circumstances.

What you’ll do

Our award-winning Turnaround and Restructuring practice is recognized as one of the leading providers in the market. Our team has worked on many of the world’s largest and most high-profile bankruptcies and restructurings. Since 1981, we have helped set the standard for preserving value in urgent situations, working with management, investors, creditors, and other stakeholders to address complex financial, operational, and strategic challenges.

The summer internship is an opportunity to explore and understand the Turnaround and Restructuring practice. You will work with specialized and experienced teams in a collaborative environment through training and development, on-the-job shadowing on key client matters, networking across levels of the firm, and hands-on exposure to the work of professionals providing business, financial, operational, and strategic consulting advice to companies that are underperforming, highly leveraged, distressed, or transforming. The internship may provide the opportunity to convert to a full-time role upon graduation.

  • Analyze corporate performance, business models, cost-reduction opportunities, revenue growth opportunities, and profitability improvement initiatives in high-stakes client situations.
  • Research industry trends and synthesize complex qualitative and quantitative data to identify root causes of business challenges.
  • Develop recommendations for new methods, systems, procedures, or organizational changes and prepare presentation materials that clearly explain the analysis, logic, and strategy supporting those recommendations.
  • Gather data through research, analysis, and client interviews, as applicable, to understand business issues and support fact-based recommendations.
  • Support teams working with healthy, underperforming, highly leveraged, distressed, or transforming companies across urgent, high-impact situations.
  • Apply finance, accounting, operational, statistical, and analytical concepts to frame analyses, test hypotheses, and support practical recommendations.
  • Build or support financial, operational, and analytical models, including analyses related to liquidity, working capital, business planning, performance improvement, strategic alternatives, or value preservation.
  • Prepare client-ready presentations, reports, work papers, and supporting materials using Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Use research, data tools, and relevant AI-enabled tools to support analysis, insight generation, and execution while applying appropriate human judgment, validation, and discretion.
  • Provide direction and guidance to analysts, as needed, while working collaboratively with project teams and client stakeholders.

This description is not designed to encompass a comprehensive listing of required activities, duties or responsibilities.

The Turnaround & Restructuring MBA Summer Internship is a temporary role located in New York, Chicago, Dallas, or Houston. New York is preferred.

What you’ll need

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience building and analyzing financial models, such as Discounted Cash Flows (DCF), Leveraged Buyout (LBO) models, 13-Week Cash Flow forecasts, and Three-Statement Models, to project forward-looking financial performance.
  • A professional financial credential — CPA, CFA, CMA, or equivalent — strongly preferred
  • Experience using AI-enabled tools to enhance analysis, insight generation, and execution, with an understanding of when human judgment, validation, and discretion are essential.
  • Experience using advanced Microsoft Excel capabilities (e.g., pivot tables, formulas, financial modeling and data analysis).
  • Exposure to data tools beyond Excel, such as SQL, Tableau, Power BI, Python, R, or similar analytics and visualization tools, is preferred.
  • Experience in a professional services, consulting firm, restructuring, finance, investment banking, or other client-service environment.
  • Experience working with underperforming, highly leveraged, distressed, or transforming companies.
  • Experience with business-critical topics such as liquidity management, working capital management, cost optimization, operations improvement, capital structure analysis, mergers and acquisitions, liability management, or profitable top-line growth.
  • Experience working in team-based, collaborative, or client-service environments where shared ownership and clear communication are required.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate professionally with team members, clients, and senior stakeholders, including sharing updates, managing expectations, and escalating issues when appropriate.
  • Demonstrated sustained commitment, accountability, and follow-through in academic, professional, team-based, or project-based settings, including managing tasks, communicating progress, meeting deadlines, and delivering accurate, high-quality work.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing an MBA degree with an expected graduation date between December 2027 and August 2028, with ability to participate in our internship program from June 2027 to August 2027.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution or foreign equivalent.
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Strong financial analysis skills, including the ability to evaluate financial statements, business performance, and operational information.
  • Demonstrated experience performing analytical or quantitative work, including analyzing data, developing models, identifying patterns, issues, or opportunities, and synthesizing findings to support practical, fact-based business recommendations through professional experience, internships, coursework, research, or projects.
  • Professional proficiency in English in written and verbal formats required to support client communications and deliverables.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint (e.g., ability to use formulas, data analysis tools, and create structured presentations).
  • Ability to travel up to 100% Monday through Friday as required.
  • Must be able to work a hybrid schedule with regular in-person presence in our New York City, Dallas, Houston, or Chicago office and be able to commute to the office as required.
  • Willingness to work outside of normal U.S. business hours as unique projects/needs arise.
  • Ability to work full time in an office and remote environment; physically able to sit/stand at a computer and work in front of a computer screen for significant portions of the workday.
  • Must become familiar with, and promote and abide by, our Core Values as defined by the AlixPartners’ Code of Conduct and foster an inclusive environment with people at all levels of an organization.
  • IMPORTANT: This role is not eligible for employer-sponsored work authorization at any time. Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without employer sponsorship now and in the future.

This includes candidates who are currently authorized to work on a temporary basis (e.g., H-1B visa, STEM OPT, CPT, TN, F-1, J-1, etc.) but will require sponsorship at a later date. Candidates who will require employer sponsorship at any point during their employment are not eligible for this role.

The salary range for this role takes into account a number of factors and is $35,000.
