Description
Hohl Industrial Services is seeking an experienced Quality Control Inspector to join our Quality Management team. Candidates who currently hold a Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification are strongly preferred. We are also particularly interested in candidates who are actively working toward obtaining their CWI accreditation and have the steel fabrication and welding inspection experience necessary to succeed in this role.
As a QC Inspector, you will play an important role in maintaining Hohl Industrial Services' quality standards by performing inspections throughout the receiving, fabrication, welding, finishing, testing, and final inspection processes. This is a hands-on position for someone who is highly detail-oriented, organized, and comfortable working closely with welders, mechanics, craft personnel, management, clients, and other project stakeholders.
What You'll Do
As a QC Inspector, your responsibilities will include:
Receiving & Material Inspection
- Inspect incoming materials to verify compliance with requirements.
- Review and process Material Test Reports (MTRs).
- Perform material identification and marking.
- Perform bolt testing.
Fabrication & In-Process Inspection
- Verify materials and fabrication requirements.
- Perform weld preparation and fit-up inspections.
- Conduct dimensional verifications.
- Perform visual weld inspections.
- Inspect surface preparation and coating applications.
- Perform paint dry film thickness (DFT) and appearance inspections.
- Perform hardness testing and sweep verification.
- Inspect heat-forming operations.
- Verify that qualified welders are being used and properly documented.
- Coordinate and witness hydrostatic testing as required.
- Verify welder stamps are properly applied or recorded.
- Perform informational Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) and Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT) as needed.
- Conduct final inspections.
Quality Control
- Generate and manage Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) and material controls.
- Maintain in-process and final inspection records.
- Complete work-release closeouts and submit documentation to the Quality Control Manager.
- Maintain calibration records for QC measuring equipment.
- Monitor and inspect shop equipment calibrations.
Welding Program
- Oversee and/or witness Procedure Qualification Records (PQRs).
- Oversee and/or witness welder qualification testing.
- Maintain welder continuity logs.
Coordination & Additional Responsibilities
- Coordinate shop Non-Destructive Examination (NDE).
- Coordinate third-party inspections.
- Complete additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.
What We're Looking For
We are looking for a quality-minded professional with strong fabrication and welding knowledge who takes pride in accuracy, documentation, and attention to detail.
Required/Preferred Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
- Minimum of two years of steel fabrication experience.
- Valid Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification strongly preferred.
- Candidates who are actively working toward obtaining their CWI certification are strongly encouraged to apply.
- Must meet the applicable requirements of AWS QC1 – Standard for AWS Certification of Welding Inspectors.
- Ability to read, understand, and apply technical information, drawings, measurements, and specifications.
- Understanding of geometry, dimensional tolerancing, and related mathematical concepts.
- Strong organizational and documentation skills.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and competing priorities.
- Ability to communicate effectively with personnel at all levels, including union craft personnel, clients, vendors, and other external contacts.
- Proficiency with common computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and email.
- Ability to efficiently complete inspection forms, reports, and other required documentation.
- Ability to successfully complete an annual visual acuity test.
Additional Certifications
The successful candidate will be expected to obtain additional qualifications as required, including:
- Magnetic Particle Inspection (MT) – Level II in accordance with ASNT-SNT-TC-1A within two years of hire.
- Liquid Penetrant Inspection (PT) – Level II in accordance with ASNT-SNT-TC-1A within two years of hire.
- Structural Bolting Inspection – Certificate of Completion within one year of hire.
What Success Looks Like
The successful QC Inspector will be someone who can confidently identify quality issues, communicate concerns effectively, maintain accurate inspection documentation, and work collaboratively with fabrication and field personnel to ensure work meets established quality requirements.
You should be comfortable working in both an office and industrial/shop environment and be prepared for hands-on inspection activities that may involve lifting, stretching, climbing, crawling, and working in difficult-access areas.
Work Environment
This position involves time in both office and field/shop environments. Field and shop conditions may include dirty, non-climate-controlled plant construction areas with difficult access and potentially hazardous conditions.
