Description
Role: Engineering Manager (Area Lead) - Site Specific Design
Location: Flexible working with travel to Rolls-Royce SMR offices, customer locations and project sites as required – Primary office sites are: Derby, Warrington or Manchester
Our mission is to deliver clean, affordable energy for all. Our Small Modular Reactor (SMR) provides a British solution to a global energy challenge. We are in pole position to become a world leader in SMRs and the UK's premier green export technology.
The Engineering - CSA Installation & Modular Integration team sits at the centre of power station delivery, bringing together multidisciplinary expertise to develop integrated, deployable designs. The team plays a critical role in ensuring our SMR technology can be adapted and deployed successfully across a range of customer sites and international programmes.
In this context, we are looking for an Engineering Manager (Area Lead) - Site Specific Design to report to the Senior Engineering Manager and lead the multidisciplinary development of a defined area of the Rolls-Royce SMR power station design. This is a key engineering leadership role responsible for coordinating site-specific design activities, integrating engineering disciplines and ensuring alignment between customer site requirements and the wider Rolls-Royce SMR programme.
We'll need you to:
- Lead and develop a multidisciplinary engineering team to deliver a fully integrated site-specific design within your area of responsibility.
- Provide engineering leadership across systems, structures and components throughout all stages of the project lifecycle.
- Manage engineering delivery against programme milestones, budgets and performance objectives whilst maintaining oversight of risks, opportunities and resource requirements.
- Coordinate and integrate engineering activities across internal teams, suppliers, partners and external stakeholders.
- Ensure site-specific design solutions remain aligned with the generic Rolls-Royce SMR design and broader programme requirements.
- Support the development and management of physical adaptation and variant requirements for deployment across different sites, customers and global regions.
- Work closely with project management teams to define resource requirements and ensure successful delivery of engineering outputs.
- Support construction readiness, site development and integration activities to ensure engineering solutions are practical and deployable.
- Contribute to the management and monitoring of key power station attributes, including site characteristics, constructability, programme performance and cost targets.
- Support engagement with customers, regulators, business development teams and strategic partners as required.
- Ensure Health, Safety and Environmental standards are embedded throughout all designated engineering activities.
- Support integration of engineering outputs into supply chain, operations and delivery organisations.
As you can see, this is a pivotal leadership role supporting the deployment of Rolls-Royce SMR technology around the world. You'll bring engineering leadership capability, strong programme delivery skills and the ability to coordinate diverse technical teams across complex engineering challenges, together with:
We're looking for:
- Chartered Engineer status (or equivalent).
- A relevant engineering degree or demonstrable equivalent industry experience.
- Experience in a senior engineering management or engineering leadership position within a complex engineering environment.
- Proven experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams and delivering complex engineering programmes.
- Experience managing engineering performance, project metrics, risks and delivery against programme objectives.
- Demonstrable expertise in multidisciplinary design management and systems integration.
- Experience of power stations, major infrastructure projects or similarly complex industrial facilities.
- Strong understanding of physical design integration and interfaces with civil engineering systems, structures and components.
- Experience working within matrix organisations involving internal teams, suppliers, delivery partners and external stakeholders.
- Strong leadership skills with experience implementing best practice methods and driving continuous improvement.
Particularly relevant experience may include:
- Cooling Water Island
- Civil Engineering and Site Preparation
- Construction Readiness and Planning
- Nuclear Island Design
We'd also welcome:
- Experience supporting nuclear and environmental safety case development.
- Experience working with nuclear or environmental regulators.
- Knowledge of infrastructure planning, licensing and approvals processes.
- Experience managing engineering delivery within highly regulated industries.
Location
We offer flexible and hybrid working arrangements. The successful candidate should expect regular travel to Rolls-Royce SMR offices, customer locations and project sites as required.
