Description
Essential Duties:
- Answer incoming calls and provide accurate, timely nursing information and support within scope of practice.
- Schedule and coordinate patient appointments and services across program areas as needed.
- Provide nursing direction and delegation to LPN staff in accordance with Kansas nursing regulations. (This responsibility does not include formal supervisory authority.)
- Maintain accurate and timely patient, program, and activity documentation as required.
- Maintain current knowledge of nursing standards and departmental practices and provide documentation of current licensure and required continuing education.
- Participate in required trainings related to assigned programs, grants, licensure, and public health responsibilities.
- Assist with grant activities, including applications, reporting, budget tracking, and other program-related requirements as assigned.
- Assist with billing, reconciliation, inventory, and other fiscal or operational activities as assigned.
- Assist with administrative functions, including data entry, reporting, correspondence, filing, scanning, and other departmental support activities as needed.
- Collaborate with healthcare providers, community organizations, governmental agencies, schools, and other stakeholders to support public health programs and initiatives.
- Participate in cross-training and maintain competency in assigned and designated backup program areas to support continuity of operations, staffing needs, and surge capacity.
- Demonstrate flexibility in assignment and workload by providing support across programs and emergency response functions as directed by the Health Director or designee.
- Maintain confidentiality and security of protected health information in accordance with HIPAA, applicable laws, and departmental policies.
- Perform other related duties and special projects as assigned.
The RN will be assigned primary program responsibilities based on departmental needs and is expected to participate in cross-training and provide coverage in additional program areas as needed. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
Clinical Services:
- Provide nursing services within established scope of practice, protocols, and departmental policies, including immunizations, medication administration/injections, laboratory specimen collection and processing, STD/STI screening and assessment, and Women’s Health services.
- Conduct patient assessments, provide education and counseling, coordinate referrals and follow-up, maintain appropriate documentation, and respond to patient needs or adverse reactions as applicable.
- Perform assigned WIC nursing functions, including assessments, growth monitoring, health and nutrition education, breastfeeding support, referrals, documentation, and other activities in accordance with program requirements.
- Conduct communicable disease surveillance and response activities, including case investigations, contact tracing, data collection, reporting, outbreak response, follow-up, and public education.
- Provide or assist with assessments, education, referrals, and program activities that support maternal, infant, child, and family health outcomes.
- Participate in community outreach, health education, and public awareness initiatives, including health fairs, public health campaigns, presentations, workshops, and digital communications.
- Provide education to individuals, families, and community groups on disease prevention, wellness, and other public health topics.
- Participate in emergency preparedness planning, training, exercises, response and recovery activities, documentation, inventory management, and applicable grant requirements.
- During declared emergencies, infectious disease outbreaks, or other public health incidents, employees may be assigned duties outside their normal work assignments consistent with training, licensure, and operational needs.
Education & Work Experience:
- Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) from an accredited nursing program required.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
- One (1) to three (3) years of nursing experience preferred; public health experience preferred.
- Current, unrestricted Kansas Registered Nurse (RN) license required.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Valid Kansas driver's license required.
Salary Range: $25.41 - $38.12 / hour
Typical Hiring Range: $25.41 - $27.70 (DOQ)
***Approved 1.5% Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) increase effective 12/26/2026 + 3.0% increase after satisfactory completion of initial 6-month introductory period.***
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Knowledge of nursing practices, clinical procedures, patient assessment techniques, and applicable healthcare standards.
- Knowledge of Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems, clinical scheduling processes, and computer applications including Microsoft Office and other software platforms utilized by the County.
- Knowledge of governmental public health, healthcare, and regulatory requirements applicable to nursing services.

Strong collaboration and relationship-building skills are essential to effectively lead programs and advance public health priorities.
Typical Schedule:
This position is considered non-emergency and follows a relatively consistent work schedule as established by the director. Occasional travel, including overnight stays, may be required to attend training, conferences, or meetings. Overtime is infrequent but may be necessary during periods of increased workload or to meet operational needs.
