Description
At APM Terminals, a global leader in port and terminal operations, we enable global trade and drive sustainable growth. What drives us forward is a mindset of always improving — observing how work happens, identifying what creates value, and removing what gets in the way. We constantly look for smarter, simpler, and safer ways of operating. If you thrive in environments where people value learning and are committed to continuously improve daily operations, join us and be a part of our journey.
What We Can Offer
At APM Terminals, we foster a dynamic learning and training culture that empowers our employees to excel. Our commitment to improvement means every team member has the opportunity to develop their skills and advance their careers by continuously refining how we work. Experience a diverse, multinational workplace where your operational insights directly influence how we work.
- Deepen your expertise in structural engineering, fatigue and fracture assessment, inspection technologies and NDT methods across a global equipment fleet.
- Develop leadership capabilities by steering consultants and cross-functional project teams and mentoring terminal staff.
- Strengthen your strategic and business acumen by connecting engineering decisions with business goals, budgets, life-extension considerations and capital expenditure decisions.
- Gain global exposure by collaborating with terminals, OEMs, consultants and inspection bodies worldwide.
Key Responsibilities
- Review structural design packages for new-build STS, RTG/RMG, ASC and other major equipment, assessing drawings, calculations, FEA reports, welding and NDT plans against APM Terminals specifications and applicable codes.
- Engineer repair solutions for critical structural defects, including cracks, corrosion and impact damage, ensuring repair procedures address root causes and can be executed effectively on site.
- Build, validate and maintain FEA models and support BIM models for the major equipment fleet, using them to assess defects, fatigue and remaining life and support modification and life-extension decisions.
- Assess structural inspection findings from terminals, classify defect severity and recommend appropriate actions, including repairs or operating restrictions where required.
- Develop and optimise structural inspection manuals and risk-based inspection intervals, helping terminals reduce inspection effort and cost without increasing structural risk.
- Maintain and improve equipment structural specifications and engineering standards, incorporating lessons learned from design reviews, failures and operational experience.
- Partner with terminals, OEMs and external consultants globally, translating complex technical findings into clear recommendations and building structural engineering capability across the network.
What We Are Looking For
- Continuous improvement mindset: we are looking for someone who brings a thoughtful improvement mindset—curious about how work gets done and motivated to make meaningful, sustainable improvements over time.
- Leadership expectation: We are looking for people who consistently put customers first, lead by example with respect for people, deliver results with integrity, and drive continuous improvement by solving problems at the root, developing people, and raising standards every day.
- Bring a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Structural or Mechanical Engineering, together with at least five years of structural engineering experience on steel structures. A vocational/technical qualification combined with 7+ years of relevant structural repair and/or design experience is also considered.
- Demonstrate hands-on FEA experience with large welded steel structures, including fatigue assessment, alongside knowledge of failure mechanisms such as fatigue, fracture, corrosion and buckling.
- Apply relevant structural engineering codes and standards, with knowledge of welding and NDT methods. Chartered/professional engineer status, welding or NDT qualifications, and PMP and/or PRINCE2 certification are preferred or advantageous.
- Use at least one industry-standard FEA package such as Ansys, Abaqus or Nastran/Femap at an advanced level, with the ability to interpret structural drawings and 3D/BIM models.
- Communicate fluently in business English and explain complex technical findings clearly to engineering and non-technical stakeholders across different countries, cultures and seniority levels.
