Park Maintenance Technician

Under the general supervision of the Parks Superintendent and Assistant Parks Superintendent, this position is responsible for manual work in the maintenance of all municipal park facilities in the Town including ball fields, playgrounds, buildings and site amenities.  

Schedule

This 40 hour a week C94 non-exempt position works a regular schedule of 7am to 3:30pm, Monday through Friday, with a 30 minute unpaid lunch break. This position will seasonally shift its hours to 6am to 2:30pm Monday through Friday. 

Salary

$26.22 - 28.34 per hour, $54,533 - 58,953 Annually, C-94 Grade 7, 8 hour shift 

• Provides trash pick-up, weeding,  repair work, leaf cleanup, restroom cleaning, painting, setting up facility for events, preparing ball fields for use;
• Plants grass, flowers, shrubs and trees;
• Mows lawns, trims edges, prunes trees and shrubs, cuts brush, rakes leaves;
• Operates riding mowers, hand mowers and a variety of related power and hand tools and equipment;
• Measures, lines, grades and maintains baseball and softball fields;
• Performs minor maintenance and servicing of mowers and related equipment;
• Drives a pickup and/or dump truck with trailer;
• Plows snow as needed;
• Performs other duties as assigned and consistent with this position.
• Serves as a member of various employee committees as assigned.
• May be assigned to other departments on a temporary basis.

Education and Experience

• High School diploma or GED equivalent 
• Some experience in the operation of pickup trucks and dump trucks and operation of ground care equipment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Capabilities

• Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of grounds care equipment;
• Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of pickup trucks, dump trucks and backhoes;
• Ability to follow and understand written and oral instructions;
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods under unfavorable weather conditions; ability to work independently;
• Ability to deal with the general public on a daily basis in a helpful and courteous manner;
• Ability to perform general plumbing, electrical, janitorial and other building maintenance tasks;
• Must be able to read and understand safety manuals and product labels;

Skilled In:

• The safe and efficient operation of trucks and grounds care equipment

Required Licenses

• Must have or be able to obtain within 6 months of notice a valid Rhode Island Class A Commercial Driver’s License with all applicable type ratings, certifications and endorsements as required, including a hoister’s license and a pesticide applicator license
• Must have or be able to obtain all necessary licenses, certificates, ratings, and endorsements as required to fulfill the duties of this position within 6 months of notice

The individual should be familiar with the operation of:

•  Pickup truck, small backhoe, dump truck with trailer and snowplow, lawn and landscaping equipment including tractors, mowers, chain saws, power saws, sanders, routers, torches, edgers, weed trimmers, electric motors, pumps, sprinklers, irrigation systems, miscellaneous hand and power tools for turf maintenance, carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical and cement finishing work
