Senior Scientist in the study of Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders (ADRD)
The Hinda and Arthur Marcus Institute for Aging Research, located within Hebrew SeniorLife’s (HSL) long-term chronic care hospital is seeking an established independent investigator Senior Scientist to help expand its clinical research in Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders (ADRD).
Recognizing the enormous global need for more applied research into the prevention and treatment of ADRD, as well as HSL’s unique role in caring for people with cognitive problems in an academic-oriented environment, the organization’s recent strategic plan calls for the expansion of research and clinical programs in the area of ADRD. This focus is intended to become one of the pillars of HSL’s mission, distinguishing it as a center of excellence for discovery and innovation in the field of brain health.
Building on its many resources for successful ADRD research and translation, including a large population of older adults, Harvard affiliation, expert neurocognitive and geriatric medicine faculty, clinical trials capability, the Wolk Center for Memory Health, and strong institutional commitment, the Marcus Institute aims to recruit a well-respected leader who can expand and enhance its ADRD research portfolio.
The successful candidate will be eligible for a faculty appointment at the appropriate rank of Assistant or Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School. This appointment is commensurate with teaching responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities and Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have an established record of independent research in ADRD, as demonstrated by a track record of NIH, foundation, or Industry grants and peer-reviewed publications. The candidate should have experience leading interdisciplinary research programs and mentoring new investigators.
Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in clinical trials in older people testing new drugs, devices, and services for the prevention and/or treatment of cognitive impairment and dementia, established collaborations with other ADRD research centers, familiarity with large database research, and clinical experience caring for patients with cognitive disorders so that research discoveries are readily translated into clinical care.

- Senior Scientist level faculty members generally have distinguished records of scholarship and professional accomplishments recognized at the international level. Senior Scientists most often have sustained records of funding and reputations as top researchers in the field.
- Candidates for the Senior Scientist rank most likely have directed independent research programs and/or collaborative studies and published highly innovative research as senior authors. They have a highly capable training record, which may include developing instructional training programs, serving as course director, or teaching to international audiences.
- Senior Scientists have generally demonstrated significant service contributions to their institute.

Qualifications:
- Education: PhD and/MD degree with demonstrated research experience through grants and publications as outlined above.
- Established record of conducting original research that has significant impact on the field, bring unique expertise to projects, and continue to mentor and train new investigators.
- Established record of speaking nationally and internationally, sustained funding for own research programs, and service in leadership roles for scientific journals, NIH committees, scientific societies, and the Institute.
- Must be professional, proactive, collaborative, conscientious and results-oriented individual. Must have an optimistic and positive demeanor, excellent oral and written communication skills, good intuition and able to adapt to changing priorities and display good, sound judgment with a sense of humor.
- Superb organizational skills. Must have solid analytical skills. Must be creative and proactive yet disciplined, discriminating and able to streamline work volume in order to maintain bottom line efforts in midst of multi-tasking and daily re-prioritizing. Must have ability to innovate, think strategically and conceptually, manage multiple projects simultaneously and handle even difficult situations.
- Must be motivated to learn and flexible to change.
- Computer literacy required; experience with databases, Windows, Word, Excel, and databases.
