Job Description:
About the Team:
Our Technology team drives the evolution of our Technology, Engineering, Data, Product and User Experience functions. With a keen focus on delivering cutting-edge solutions, we shape the digital landscape for our customers, readers and users. From revolutionizing visuals to optimizing tools and harnessing the power of data, mobile, video and social platforms, our team is committed to providing a seamless and immersive experience across all touchpoints. Collaborating closely with our newsrooms and strategic partners, we spearhead the development of groundbreaking products and technologies.
About Dow Jones Design & Research:
Our Design & Research org brings together world-class designers and researchers with a unified purpose: to connect people to the news and information that matters most. We're the strategic force that transforms deep user understanding into exceptional product experiences across our entire portfolio—from The Wall Street Journal to Factiva.
Together, we're building coherent, accessible experiences that honor our 135-year foundation while pushing us boldly into the future. We're a globally distributed team spearheading a digital transformation at Dow Jones, newly staffed by industry leaders from Google, LinkedIn, The New York Times, and more. Through our joint expertise in design craft and research rigor, we ensure that millions of users can depend on our platforms for truth in a world full of noise.
About the Role:
We're seeking a Principal Product Designer to own the design strategy for our WSJ enterprise products—professional experiences that bring The Wall Street Journal and the wider Dow Jones portfolio to the businesses and institutions that rely on our journalism to make informed decisions. In this a senior individual-contributor role, you will set the direction for one of our growth areas and become a go-to design expert on how Dow Jones serves enterprise and professional customers.
Enterprise customers don’t always consume content the way consumers do. Designing for them means thinking beyond the article—how a professional finds what's relevant to their work, how an organization manages access for its employees, and how our trusted journalism earns a place in the working day of decision-makers. You'll hold enterprise design to the high bar set by our consumer products and be tightly integrated with the platforms guaranteeing these decision-makers are empowered with WSJ + Dow Jones content.
This is a role with influence and scope. You'll shape strategy with senior design, product, and business leadership, resolve the tension between enterprise requirements and consumer-grade craft, contribute to the enterprise patterns that live in our Index Design System, and mentor senior designers across both our professional and consumer brands. You'll be the design authority for your domain—navigating ambiguity and setting the standard others build upon.
You will report to the SVP of Product Design within the Design & Research organization.
You Will:
Own the design strategy for our enterprise experiences. Set a coherent, multi-year direction for how professional customers discover, read, and act on our journalism, and tie it to measurable outcomes such as seat growth, engagement, renewal, and expansion
Own the admin experience that powers the reader experience. Design how organizations manage seats, assign content, and understand engagement across their teams
Hold enterprise work to the Journal's standard of craft. Bring the typography, information design, and attention to detail that characterize our consumer products into a business environment, and help set the bar for what enterprise design quality means at Dow Jones
Shape strategy with senior leadership. Present your direction to senior design, product, and business leaders, and to other executives where needed, building the partnerships that move great design forward across a field of competing priorities
Establish further patterns in our Index Design System—the components, density, navigation, and permission-aware behavior that professional products depend on—knowing when conformity with our consumer brands serves the user and when a professional audience warrants a different approach
Solve the hard, ambiguous problems in your domain. Professional workflows, AI-assisted features users must trust, and personalization that must earn its place are problems devoid of clear precedent. You'll create clarity where none exists and develop the approaches others adopt
Connect design to outcomes. Partner with Research and analytics to tie your decisions to engagement, retention, and revenue, and help teams understand which measures actually matter for a professional product
Mentor and grow senior designers across our professional and consumer brands, shape a strong design culture, and strengthen the talent pipeline through the standards you set and the craft you share
You Have:
10+ years of product design experience, including significant time owning complex, systems-level or platform work, with a track record of setting design direction that spans multiple products or audiences
Depth in both enterprise and consumer design. You've built products for professional users with real workflows and real constraints, and you hold that work to the standard of the best consumer experiences. This combination is the core requirement of the role.
Experience designing professional platforms—workspaces, dashboards, personalized feeds, admin and permissions tooling
A portfolio that demonstrates strategic impact across multiple products or audiences: platform or design-system contributions, cross-team pattern-setting, and strong end-to-end craft on sophisticated products
A proven ability to influence senior stakeholders, translating design strategy into business terms and building alignment across teams whose priorities compete
Strong systems thinking and deep experience with design systems, including establishing patterns that other teams adopt and evolve
Judgment about personalization and AI-assisted experiences—when they genuinely help a professional user, when they diminish trust, and how to design for these scenarios
Excellence in Figma, with the ability to set standards for design communication, specifications, and documentation across teams
A deep command of design fundamentals and accessibility compliance standards (WCAG), with fluency in dense, information-rich interfaces
A track record of mentoring designers and helping raise the craft and quality of the teams around you
Comfort operating amid ambiguity—setting direction in your domain during shifting priorities and emerging technology, and acting as the go-to expert others turn to
Bachelor's degree -or- equivalent work experience in Design, HCI, or a comparable field
Nice to Have:
Experience designing B2B information services, professional intelligence, or research platforms
Familiarity with entitlements, seat management, or permissions models at enterprise scale
Experience shipping AI-assisted features—summarization, recommendation, or generative content—in production products
Background in news media, publishing, or other content-heavy products
Experience designing across a multi-brand portfolio
Experience contributing productively to a design system
Experience partnering with external research, brand, or design agencies
Working knowledge of financial services, consulting, or other professional-services industries
An external presence through speaking or writing on design at scale
International or cross-cultural design experience
