Description

The Electrical Engineer designs, documents, validates, and supports electrical and electronic systems used in Eagle Traffic products and customer solutions. This role translates customer plans, specifications, applicable standards, and manufacturing requirements into accurate wiring diagrams, bills of material, cabinet layouts, work instructions, test procedures, and released engineering documentation. The position partners closely with Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Quality, Sales, Field Service, suppliers, and customers to deliver safe, reliable, manufacturable Traffic and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) solutions.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Develop electrical designs for new and existing traffic signal, lighting, communications, networking, and ITS control cabinets and related assemblies.
  • Review customer plans, specifications, bid documents, and agency requirements; identify technical gaps, risks, exceptions, and the best-fit design approach.
  • Create and maintain electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, interconnect drawings, panel layouts, cable drawings, and supporting design documentation using AutoCAD or other approved CAD tools.
  • Generate, verify, and release accurate bills of material (BOMs), routings, work instructions, assembly instructions, installation instructions, and engineering change documentation within the company ERP/PLM processes.
  • Apply relevant industry and regulatory requirements, including MUTCD, NEMA traffic standards, UL requirements, and applicable agency or customer specifications; communicate design implications to internal stakeholders.
  • Program, configure, bench test, troubleshoot, and validate traffic signal control equipment, cabinet subsystems, communications devices, and integrated ITS components in the manufacturing environment and, as needed, in the field.
  • Develop test plans and acceptance criteria for new or modified designs; support first-article builds, production validation, root-cause analysis, and corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing Engineering and production teams to improve manufacturability, assembly efficiency, quality, safety, and repeatability.
  • Provide technical support to Sales, Customer Service, Field Service, installers, contractors, and customers, including design clarification, proposal support, startup assistance, and troubleshooting.
  • Work with suppliers to evaluate components, substitutions, product changes, lead-time risks, lifecycle status, integration requirements, and technical performance.
  • Prepare cost estimates and technical input for proposals, custom-engineered solutions, and product changes.
  • Maintain organized, accurate, and retrievable design records; document customer-specific standards and preferences for future use.
  • Participate in design reviews, continuous improvement activities, quality initiatives, and product development efforts; recommend improvements based on field feedback, technology trends, and industry best practices.
  • Monitor assigned engineering metrics such as design lead time, on-time release, first-pass quality, engineering changes, and recurring production issues.
  • Perform other duties and support special projects as assigned.

  • Experience in electrical design, controls, systems integration, industrial electronics, transportation technology, or a related engineering environment.
  • Experience in the Traffic / ITS industry, traffic signal cabinets, field equipment, or transportation agency standards is strongly preferred.
  • Experience supporting a manufacturing operation or engineered-to-order product environment is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to translate customer and agency requirements into complete, accurate, and manufacturable electrical designs.
  • Working knowledge of traffic signal control equipment, controllers, cabinet architectures, detection, communications, networking, and related ITS technologies preferred.

  • Proficiency with AutoCAD or comparable electrical CAD software; experience with document control, ERP/MRP, and engineering change systems preferred.
  • Ability to read and create electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, mechanical layouts, bills of material, and technical specifications.
  • Hands-on ability to use multimeters, electrical/electronic test equipment, hand tools, and power tools safely.
  • Strong troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and technical decision-making skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts to production employees, suppliers, customers, and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, respond to changing requirements, and meet project deadlines while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a cross-functional manufacturing environment.
