Key Responsibilities

At Princess Cruises, the health and safety of our guests and teammates is our highest priority. As a Public Health Technician, you will play a key role in supporting the ship's public health programs by helping maintain the highest standards in pest management, food safety, potable water, and recreational water systems.

Working closely with the Public Health Officer, you will serve as the ship's dedicated pest control coordinator while supporting a variety of public health initiatives that help ensure a safe and healthy environment onboard. You will work across multiple departments, providing practical support, timely follow-up, and clear communication to help prevent issues before they arise.

As a Public Health Technician, you will:
  • Support the ship's Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program through inspections, monitoring, treatment, and follow-up activities, helping to prevent and control pests in accommodation, food service, technical, and outdoor areas.
  • Conduct routine inspections throughout the vessel to identify and control pest activity, documenting findings, recommending corrective actions, and verifying that issues are resolved effectively and promptly.
  • Apply pest control measures, including pesticides, in accordance with company procedures and safety requirements, ensuring correct dosing, application methods, and use of personal protective equipment at all times.
  • Maintain accurate records of pest monitoring devices, inspections, treatments, and corrective actions, ensuring logs are up to date, well-organized, and ready for review during internal checks and external inspections.
  • Inspect deliveries and operational areas for signs of pests and sanitation concerns, working with stores, galley, and housekeeping teams to address risks such as poor stock rotation, damaged packaging, or inadequate cleaning.
  • Support food safety programs through data collection, food sampling, and operational inspections, helping to verify temperature control, hygiene practices, and cleaning standards in line with company and regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct potable and recreational water sampling, testing, and monitoring activities, following established schedules and procedures to help ensure safe drinking water and well-maintained pools, whirlpools, and spas.
  • Ensure safe handling, storage, and disposal of pest control chemicals and equipment, maintaining inventory, labelling, and secure storage in line with environmental, health, and safety guidelines.
  • Assist during internal and external public health audits and inspections by preparing documentation, accompanying inspectors, answering operational questions, and supporting timely implementation of any required corrective actions.
  • Deliver guidance and support to onboard teams regarding pest prevention and public health best practices, including informal coaching, toolbox talks, and practical demonstrations that promote a strong public health culture.
  • Help maintain compliance with company, environmental, and public health standards, including relevant maritime and port health regulations, by monitoring day-to-day operations and escalating concerns when necessary.

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, demonstrating strong basic literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Background in Agriculture, Health, Sanitation, Pest Control, Environmental Health, or a related field, with an understanding of how these disciplines contribute to public health and safe living environments.
  • Working knowledge of pest management practices and pest identification, including the ability to recognise common public health pests, understand their life cycles, and apply appropriate control methods.
  • Knowledge of the safe and correct use and storage of pest management chemicals and traps, including adherence to safety data sheets, correct labelling, and compliance with relevant health, safety, and environmental regulations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and general computer systems, with the ability to accurately record data, prepare reports, manage schedules, and communicate findings using email and other digital tools.
  • Strong communication and organisational skills, with the ability to explain technical information clearly, maintain accurate records, prioritise tasks, and follow established procedures and protocols.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating with multiple departments onboard, building effective working relationships, responding promptly to service requests, and contributing to a coordinated approach to public health and hygiene.
