Description

Facilities Support and Grounds Technician II – Bar Harbor

The Jackson Laboratory is seeking a Facilities Support and Grounds Technician to join our team for year-round work at our Bar Harbor campus.

This position helps keep our grounds, gardens, roads, and walkways safe, welcoming, and well maintained throughout the seasons. Responsibilities include landscaping, snow and ice removal, operating grounds maintenance equipment, moving materials and equipment, and transporting employees and visitors.

As an experienced member of the grounds team, the Technician II works independently on assigned projects, helps solve maintenance problems, and provides guidance to junior technicians and small work crews. The role combines hands-on outdoor work with opportunities to contribute practical skills and experience to the care of our campus.

Some assignments take place in or near sensitive research facilities, data centers, and live animal colonies. Staff follow established procedures and coordinate with facilities colleagues to support safe work and ongoing research operations.

Key Responsibilities & Essential Functions

  • Maintain campus grounds year-round, including lawn care, gardening, planting, pruning, snow and ice removal, road and walkway maintenance, and general cleanup.
  • Perform routine grounds maintenance and materials handling tasks associated with the Technician I role.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve more complex grounds maintenance and equipment issues, coordinating with colleagues when additional expertise or support is needed.
  • Perform general maintenance and repairs within individual training and skill level.
  • Handle and transport materials, furnishings, equipment, trash and recycling, and transport employees and visitors as assigned.
  • Operate equipment such as skid-steer loaders, dump trucks, trash trucks, ride-on lawn mowers, chainsaws, plows, and sanders.
  • Identify, plant, prune, and trim campus trees, shrubs, and other plants.
  • Assist in the removal of invasive species.
  • Operate and maintain underground irrigation systems.
  • Provide on-site guidance to contractors or small work crews and train junior technicians in routine maintenance and inspection procedures.
  • Help coordinate planned maintenance, outages, and construction activities related to assigned work.
  • Use computer applications, including a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS), to record maintenance activities, complete checklists, and prepare reports.
  • Participate in on-campus emergency response, including snow and ice removal and other situations requiring grounds and general labor support. Emergency response may be required at any time, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Perform other assigned duties, including shift work on nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Travel occasionally for training or to support maintenance activities at other sites.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • At least three years of experience in grounds maintenance, landscaping, materials handling, or the related responsibilities described above.
  • Practical knowledge of grounds maintenance methods and the safe operation of associated tools and equipment.
  • Experience working in settings with specific safety and operational procedures.
  • Good troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, including the judgment to recognize when additional support is needed.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and contribute effectively as part of a team.
  • Ability to guide small work crews and help junior staff learn routine tasks and safe work practices.
  • Ability to read and use site drawings, equipment instructions, and basic schematics, and contribute practical ideas to maintenance and improvement projects.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills for working with colleagues, contractors, employees, and visitors.
  • Ability to use computer applications and maintenance management software to document work and maintain records.
  • Willingness and ability to learn new skills related to grounds and facilities operations.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
