Job Description Summary
Organization’s Summary Statement:The School of Public Policy at the University of Maryland, College Park, in partnership with the Artificial Intelligence Interdisciplinary Institute at Maryland (AIM), seeks to appoint a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Artificial Intelligence and Public Policy, starting in Fall 2027. This is a joint appointment, with the School of Public Policy as the tenure home and a joint appointment in AIM (50% SPP / 50% AIM). The successful candidate will strengthen the School’s growing research and teaching capacity at the intersection of artificial intelligence and public policy and will contribute to interdisciplinary work on the development, deployment, governance, and public policy implications of AI.
We seek candidates with deep expertise in AI and an ambitious research agenda that examines public policy dimensions of artificial intelligence. Areas of interest may include, but are not limited to, the use of AI in government and public-sector decision making; national and international AI governance, regulation, safety, security, and risk management; the impacts of AI on international, national, and homeland security and critical infrastructure resilience; democracy, media, and information; economic development and the economic and workforce implications of AI; sustainability, energy, and the environment; health and social policy; and the use of AI/ML as a methodology for policy research. It is desirable if candidates are able to contribute to one of AIM’s pillars, which include accessibility, learning, sustainability, and social justice.
The successful candidate will have the potential to develop a nationally recognized, externally funded research program, teach in the School’s undergraduate and graduate programs, including existing and future offerings in Science and Technology Policy, and AIM’s undergraduate degree programs (e.g., the Law, Policy, and Governance specialization in the bachelor’s degree in Human-Centered AI), engage actively with AIM’s interdisciplinary community, and contribute to collaborations across the University. The position will also complement existing work within the School on data science methods, technology governance, cybersecurity, information integrity, and the responsible development and use of emerging technologies.
We welcome candidates from public policy and related disciplines who possess sufficient technical or computational expertise to contribute to undergraduate and graduate instruction in areas such as artificial intelligence, data literacy, computational methods, AI and data governance, or related areas.
