Job Description:
The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for cleaning, disinfecting, inspecting, assembling, sterilizing, and distributing surgical instruments and medical equipment used throughout the Veterinary Teaching hospital, ensuring that clinicians, technicians, and students have access to safe, functional, and properly sterilized instruments and equipment needed for patient care. This position plays a vital role in infection prevention, patient safety, and operational efficiency by ensuring that all instruments and supplies are processed in accordance with established sterilization standards, regulatory requirements, and hospital protocols. The Sterile Processing Technician maintains the integrity and availability of surgical instrumentation and serves as an essential partner to clinical teams in delivering high-quality veterinary care. As part of an academic veterinary hospital, the Sterile Processing Technician also contributes to the educational mission of the hospital by supporting the hands-on learning experiences of veterinary students. Through the preparation and management of surgical instruments and equipment, this role helps ensure that students have access to the resources necessary to develop clinical and surgical skills in a safe, effective, and professional learning environment.
Job Responsibilities
45%- Perform cleaning, decontamination, inspection, assembly, sterilization, preparation, and organization of surgical instrument packs and procedure trays used throughout the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Ensure all surgical packs are assembled accurately and consistently according to clinician and service-specific requirements, including proper instrument selection, packaging, labeling, sterilization indicators, dating, and documentation of preparer initials.
20%-Maintain specialized surgical instrumentation and equipment, ensuring proper cleaning, storage, and preventive maintenance practices are followed to preserve instrument integrity and extend service life. Communicate with clinical services to ensure surgical supplies and instrument sets are readily available to support patient care, specialty procedures, and veterinary student instruction. Maintain accurate records and adhere to all hospital policies, infection control standards, and regulatory requirements related to sterile processing and instrument management.
15%-Conduct routine inspections of instruments and equipment to verify cleanliness, functionality, and completeness prior to sterilization and distribution. Identifies and promptly reports missing, damaged, worn, or malfunctioning instruments and equipment to the supervisor to facilitate repair, replacement, or corrective action.
10%-Facilitate the ordering, receipt, stocking, and distribution of medical, surgical, and operational supplies for departmental and hospital use. Monitor inventory levels, identifies supply needs, and help ensure essential items are available to support uninterrupted clinical, teaching, and patient care operations. Maintain clean and organized storage areas and contribute to inventory control efforts by assisting with stock rotation and supply audits as needed. Communicate with hospital administration, clinicians, and staff, to address supply-related needs and ensure timely access to materials required for patient care and instructional activities.
5%-Provide guidance and support to student workers in locating, identifying, and properly handling supplies, equipment, and inventory items. Assist with training and reinforcing departmental procedures related to supply management, stocking practices, and inventory organization to promote efficiency and accuracy.
5%- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree with 1 year of applicable experience OR Completion of a sterile processing training program OR CRCST or CSPDT certifications OR 5 years of experience in a working environment with similar duties
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree and 3 years of experience.
Preferred Certifications/Licenses
Graduated from an accredited Central Processing School with credentials as a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST), or Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) or equivalent.
Special or Physical Qualifications
Requires standing, sitting, walking, bending, reaching (above shoulder), reaching (below shoulder), vision (near sight), vision (far sight), crawling, twisting, pushing/pulling, climbing, squatting, lifting more than 50 pounds, and lifting less than 50 pounds.
