Description
Early-stage venture firm investing in deeply technical, research-driven founders is looking for a Finance & Operations Associate. This is an exciting opportunity to join a small, mission-driven team at the center of the AI and computer science research community and learn directly from a seasoned Finance Lead who will be a hands-on mentor. In this role, you’ll own budget vs. actuals, maintain and improve the fund’s financial models, forecast the impact of changing investment plans, support deal closings by validating wires and coordinating with the fund administrator, and keep documentation airtight. You’ll be the bridge between the fund accountants and the General Partners, making sure they have everything they need to support their portfolio and represent their LPs well. Someone who is detail oriented, low ego and curious about finance and venture, with strong Excel and modeling skills and a real sense of ownership over the trust investors place in the firm. This is a hybrid role, 3 days/week, based in San Francisco’s SoMa neighborhood. 130-170K DOE + 100% covered benefits, quarterly bonus, 401K, unlimited PTO, and lunch provided twice a week.
Responsibilities:
- Own budget vs. actuals tracking, comparing plan to reality and flagging what it means for upcoming decisions.
- Maintain, refine, and improve the fund’s Excel models so they become better, easier, and faster over time.
- Build forecasts and projections that show the impact of changes to investment amounts, timing, or plans.
- Support investment deal closings, including validating wires by phone and confirming all details are accurate before funds move.
- Serve as the bridge between the external fund administrator and the General Partners, translating accounting records into insights the GPs can act on.
- Make sure information flows smoothly between the GPs and the fund manager, with thorough and organized documentation at every step.
- Prepare financial materials for GP-level reviews.
- Help the GPs support portfolio companies well and represent LPs responsibly in how capital is deployed.
- Support broader operations needs across the organization as capacity allows.
- 1-3+ years of experience in finance, accounting, fund operations, FP&A, or a related analytical role; venture or startup exposure is a plus.
- Advanced Excel skills, including building and maintaining financial models.
- Ability to navigate a full set of financial statements and understand how money moves across them.
- Solid accounting fundamentals, with a forward-looking mindset focused on forecasting and projections, not just reporting what already happened.
- Exceptional attention to detail and the ability to track many moving numbers at once.
- High integrity and discretion, with a deep sense of accountability for the trust LPs place in the firm.
- Low ego, coachable, and eager to learn from hands-on mentorship.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain financial concepts clearly to non-finance stakeholders.
- Excited about the firm’s mission and the AI and research community it supports.
- Proficient with Google Workspace and Slack; familiarity with Ramp and AI tools is a plus.
- Able to work onsite in San Francisco 3 days/week.
