Summary

JOB SUMMARY:Within the context of a client and family-centred model of care and, in accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values, and strategic priorities and directions of Providence Health Care (PHC), the Department Head, Nurse Practitioners (“NP Department Head”) promotes a safe, respectful, and civil working environment for patients/clients, families, visitors, and staff. Reporting to the Vice President, Medical Affairs (for administrative and professional matters related to the Department members’ status as Medical Staff) and the Vice President Chief of People, Nursing and Health Professions Officer (for administrative and professional matters related to the professional practice of the members of the Department of Nurse Practitioners), and working in partnership with the Executive Director, Professional Practice as well as with Operational Program leaders, corporate staff, and community partners throughout PHC. The NP Department Head is responsible for managing NP professional practice, overseeing fiscal management, professional practice standards, human resource management of NP staff, education and mentorship within the department. Ensures all Nurse Practitioners are appropriately credentialed and comply with regulatory and organizational policies. The NP Department Head manages academic, educational, and research responsibilities in accordance with the Master Affiliation Agreement between Providence Health Care and the University of British Columbia. Represents PHC Nurse Practitioner Department on internal and external committees and meetings, including organization-wide and provincial forums. The NP Department Head maintains their clinical practice in accordance with the Practice hours requirements set out by the BC College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM) and holds active or provisional medical staff privileges under the PHC Medical Staff Rules and Bylaws.QUALIFICATIONS:Education, Training and ExperienceCurrent practicing registration as a Nurse Practitioner with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).Minimum of 5 years' experience as a Nurse Practitioner including progressive clinical practice, education, research, and project management or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.Leadership and management training or demonstrated willingness to undergo same in the very near future.Eligible for a joint appointment with the University of British Columbia, under the terms of the Master Affiliation Agreement between Providence Health Care and the University of British Columbia.Skills and AbilitiesDemonstrates strong interpersonal and communication skills to develop trust and mutual respect and foster collaboration to promote cooperative goals. Applies superior conflict management skills and expertise to persuade and negotiate effective resolution of issues/disputes.Inspires shared vision, aligning Nurse Practitioner, Medical Staff goals with service delivery strategies while promoting motivation, cohesiveness, and high-quality practice.Provides timely, strategic consultation utilizing effective targeted communication strategies to influence and facilitate effective decision making within the medical by-laws framework. Builds credibility, understanding and trust in the external community to assist the Communities of Care and PHC to meet their strategic objectives.Commitment to establish and maintaining a respectful workplace environment.Demonstrated ability to work effectively under pressure and within uncertainty to meet deadlines, balance work priorities and resolve problems in a timely manner.Strategic and Operational Leadership Provide leadership in developing and implementing strategies, structures, and strategic plans that support the effective integration, adaptation, and sustainment of the Nurse Practitioner role, while aligning with clinical education and department priorities.Ensures all Nurse Practitioner Department staff understand and align with PHC’s Mission, Vision, Values, and Strategic Directions, while developing and implementing departmental goals and objectives that reflect and support these guiding principles. Supports culturally safe, trauma-informed, and equity orientated approaches. Leads the development and implementation of long-term workforce and human resources plans to ensure the Nurse Practitioner Department is adequately staffed to meet PHC’s strategic goals. This includes capacity and succession planning, recruitment and retention initiatives, and alignment with operational and funding models. Collaborates with Medical Affairs on hiring processes, participates in recruitment search committees, and ensures resource allocation is fair, objective, and aligned with quality improvement, evidence-based practice, and performance standards.Collaborates with the Finance Department in addition to the VP Medical Affairs and VP Chief of People on budget matters. Arranges and chairs Department, Executive Committee, and Division meetings; oversee voting processes; ensure compliance with Medical Advisory Committee (MAC) obligations and meeting requirements; and enforce attendance to support Department business and quality of care discussions.Attends and participates as a voting member in PHC’s Medical Advisory Committee (MAC) and Medical Staff meetings, with potential roles on the MAC Executive Team or as a Medical Education Council representative and regularly engages with the Department of Professional Practice’s Advanced Practice meetings.Leads a collaborative strategic planning process with the NP Lead and departmental staff, fostering a shared vision and collective ownership of goals aligned with the organization’s objectives. Education and AcademicLeads the strategic and operational planning of all staff education and research activities within the Department, identifying opportunities for teaching and mentoring to advance evidence-informed practice and build capacity across the team.Oversees the development, implementation, and evaluation of clinical education frameworks, standards, and delivery methods to support quality practice environments, sustainable organizational change, and alignment with evolving models of care and service delivery needs. Develops orientation plan for new staff. Clinical Practice and Quality Ensures high standards of care and conducts clinical performance evaluations and reviews in accordance with PHC Medical Staff Bylaws.Evaluate and recommend individuals for appointment, admission, and associated privileges, including the recommendation and approval of UBC Fellow appointments, as well as exercising signatory authority for UBC Fellow applications, observers, clinical trainees, and research associates.Performance management of staff in accordance with the Medical Staff Bylaws; carries out regular performance reviews and reviews the provisional employees. Provides recommendation for extensions to provisional employees. Recommend cancellation, reduction, or curtailment of privileges in PHC. Suspend or limit privileges when necessary. Meets with the VP of Medical Affairs to discuss and provide recommendations on reappointments, and escalates any identified practice issues, as needed.Responsible for receiving and reviewing formal complaints involving NP Staff. Conducts formal investigation, by interviewing the parties involved, documenting findings, determine if any policy breached, creates written summary. Prepares formal written performance evaluation and documents in the employee file. Involves the VP Medical Affairs, at any point of the process. Designate alternative staff to ensure adequate patient care when needed, and review patient deaths to provide recommendations.Oversees and manages key administrative functions, including the review and approval of clinical protocols, approval/pre-printed order sets, and other documentation to ensure compliance with organizational standards and support effective clinical operations.Performs other related duties as required.
