The Opportunity

An established employee benefits consulting practice is seeking a Northeast Vice President to assume stewardship of a mature, high-value portfolio of public sector and union clients throughout the New York Metro and Long Island markets.

This role offers a unique succession opportunity, working alongside a senior consultant during a structured transition period while inheriting responsibility for a significant book of business serving school districts, municipalities, and labor organizations.

The successful candidate will focus on client retention, strategic consulting, compliance leadership, business development, and regional market expansion while helping clients navigate an increasingly complex employee benefits landscape.

Why This Role Matters

The Northeast public sector and union benefits market is highly relationship-driven and compliance-intensive. This position will serve as a trusted advisor to long-standing clients while identifying opportunities to expand consulting services, strengthen client outcomes, and drive regional growth.

This is an opportunity to step into an established leadership role with significant visibility, strong client relationships, and a clear path for long-term impact.

Key Responsibilities

Client Relationship Management

  • Assume responsibility for an established employee benefits consulting portfolio valued at more than $2 million in annual revenue.
  • Maintain exceptional client satisfaction and retention through proactive relationship management.
  • Serve as the primary strategic advisor for public sector, municipal, school district, and union clients.

Succession & Transition Leadership

  • Partner closely with a senior consultant during a structured transition period.
  • Facilitate relationship transfers, knowledge capture, and continuity planning.
  • Ensure a seamless experience for clients throughout the transition process.

Compliance & Advisory Expertise

  • Provide guidance on ACA reporting, ERISA, HIPAA, and other employee benefits compliance requirements.
  • Advise clients on public sector and collectively bargained benefits environments.
  • Monitor regulatory developments and communicate implications to clients.

Business Growth & Cross-Selling

  • Identify opportunities to expand existing client relationships through additional consulting and advisory services.
  • Promote solutions including self-funded plan consulting, analytics, benchmarking, pharmacy strategies, financial reporting, compliance support, and related offerings.
  • Drive revenue growth through both client expansion and new business development.

Business Development

  • Build and maintain a strong pipeline of prospective public sector and union clients throughout the New York Metro and Long Island region.
  • Develop relationships with key market stakeholders and referral sources.
  • Represent the organization within industry associations and professional networks.

Team Leadership

  • Collaborate with account management and service teams to deliver exceptional client experiences.
  • Mentor and support team members while promoting accountability, continuous improvement, and client-focused service standards.

Qualifications

Required

  • 10+ years of employee benefits consulting, brokerage, or advisory experience.
  • Minimum 5 years in a senior client-facing leadership role with direct account ownership.
  • Strong expertise in ACA reporting and employee benefits compliance.
  • Demonstrated responsibility for managing a book of business exceeding $1 million in annual revenue.
  • Established presence and professional network within the New York region.
  • Experience serving public sector, municipal, school district, union, or multiemployer clients.
  • Active New York Life & Health Insurance License.

Preferred

  • Existing relationships with Long Island school districts, public-sector organizations, or employee benefit trusts.
  • Advanced expertise in ACA compliance and reporting strategies.
  • Experience leading teams while maintaining direct client responsibilities.
  • Background navigating organizational growth, acquisitions, integrations, or business transitions.

What Success Looks Like

Year 1

  • Successfully transition and retain 95%+ of the inherited client portfolio.
  • Establish trusted relationships across key accounts.
  • Generate initial cross-selling and account expansion opportunities.

Year 2

  • Deliver measurable revenue growth from existing and new client relationships.
  • Become a recognized leader within the New York public sector benefits market.
  • Expand regional influence and business development activity.

Year 3

  • Drive sustained regional growth and profitability.
  • Develop additional team capacity to support expansion.
  • Establish a strong pipeline of public sector and union opportunities.
