General Statement of Job
The Residency Specialist evaluates, determines and processes student residency status for tuition purposes in accordance with Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) rules and South Texas College policies. This role reviews admissions applications, core residency questionnaires and complex legal or financial documentation to accurately determine residency status and appropriate tuition rates. This role ensures student records compliance and guides students through the residency reclassification process.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions:
- Reviews and evaluates information to determine the residency status of all students.
- Assists international students with providing the proper documentation required for admissions.
- Registers international students for classes.
- Monitors the status of international students to determine if they are in compliance each semester.
- Attends state and local conferences to stay abreast of current laws and regulations and receive updated information.
- Studies and interprets the current state laws and regulations regarding residency in Texas.
- Studies and interprets the current federal laws and regulations regarding student visas.
- Communicates and explains policies, procedures and requirements regarding Texas residency and admission of international students.
- Verifies data by running reports.
- Makes recommendations to the Director for system and program improvement within the department.
- Assists Coordinator of Admissions with daily operations and coordination of staff.
- Serves as Campus Security Authority.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
- Bachelor's Degree required.
- At least six (6) months of experience related to the specified duties and responsibilities preferred.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

- Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to students, parents and other employees of organization.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
- Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Checks, Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations
- Security Sensitive position: all applicants are subject to a criminal background check under South Texas College policy.
- In addition, subject to a federal background check.
- Must have or qualify for a valid Texas driver's license and proof of liability insurance.
- Certificates of Completion for F-1 Regulations for Beginners and Intermediate required.
