Description
Forensic Competency Therapist provides factual and rational therapy techniques to forensic patients in jail based or (outpatient) community settings. Responsibilities include but are not limited to identifying and assessing each patient’s illness/behavior/treatment needs; assist with treatment planning in coordination with Department of Corrections Medical/Psychiatric provider or community mental health centers and assist patients with obtaining competency to move forward with the courts.

Sharpe, Jr. Hospital holds accreditation from The Joint Commission and certification by the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS). The hospital offers a wide range of services to patients either committed to the hospital through civil commitment or, in the case of forensic patients, ordered through the judicial system. Through ongoing collaboration with West Virginia University’s Department of Behavioral Medicine & Psychiatry, a variety of medical and clinical professionals partner with the hospital’s own staff to work diligently with patients to achieve a smooth transition back to the community after discharge.

Education: | Master's degree in Psychology, Social Work, Counseling or Education from an accredited college or university. |
Experience: | One (1) year full-time or equivalent part-time working in the fields of mental illness, substance abuse, therapy, psychology, or counseling. Volunteer experience may be considered for experience. |
Substitution Information:Successful completion of graduate coursework toward a Ph.D. in Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, or Education, or completion of the degree, may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis as outlined in the Office of Shared Administration’s Equivalency Chart.
