Senior Software Engineer – AS400

ROLE PURPOSE
Develop and deliver software applications for external clients by translating business requirements into effective technical solutions.

Collaborate with Product Management and client representatives to gather, analyze, and define technical requirements and solution designs.

Work closely with engineering teams to support software enhancements, application modernization, and implementation of technical changes.

Enable successful client adoption through effective communication, technical guidance, and ongoing production support.

Role Overview

• Responsible for the design, development, enhancement, and support of business-critical AS400 applications that meet client and business requirements.
• Acts as a key liaison between Product Management, clients, and engineering teams to ensure alignment on requirements, technical solutions, and delivery outcomes.
• Contributes to application modernization, design improvements, performance optimization, and production stability through strong technical expertise and ownership.
• Provides technical leadership, promotes engineering best practices, and supports continuous improvement initiatives across the software development lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

• Analyze, design, develop, test, debug, and maintain AS400 software applications and enhancements.
• Collaborate with Product Managers, Business Analysts, and stakeholders to define business and technical requirements.
• Participate in software design discussions and contribute to architecture, design, and technology decisions.
• Create and maintain technical specifications, design documents, and support documentation.
• Develop, test, and deploy code using AS400 technologies and established development standards.
• Investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve production issues while ensuring application stability and performance.
• Perform impact analysis, effort estimation, and technical assessments for development initiatives.
• Support application modernization and continuous improvement efforts across legacy platforms.
• Conduct code reviews and promote software quality, security, and maintainability best practices.
• Collaborate with global engineering, production support, and client-facing teams to deliver high-quality solutions.
• Train and communicate with client-facing teams and stakeholders on system functionality and enhancements.
• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to technical knowledge sharing within the team.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• 7+ years of hands-on IBM AS400 (IBM i / iSeries) development experience.
• Strong expertise in RPG/RPGLE, Free-Form RPG, SQLRPGLE, CL/CLLE, DB2/400, Batch Processing, DFUs, and Query tools.
• Experience supporting production environments and resolving complex application issues.
• Knowledge of IBM i APIs, Data Queues, User Queues, Message Queues (MQ), Multi-threading, Journaling, and IBM i file systems.
• Strong understanding of software development lifecycle methodologies, including Agile and iterative development approaches.
• Experience with source control systems, code management, and release processes.
• Strong understanding and practical experience with Agile practices, particularly Scrum and Kanban.
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving abilities.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate across technical and business teams.
• Experience with GitHub Copilot, AI-assisted development, or software engineering productivity tools is an advantage.

Desirable Skills

• Knowledge of application modernization strategies for IBM i/AS400 environments.
• Exposure to API integration and distributed systems.
• Familiarity with DevOps practices and automation frameworks.
• Understanding of Agentic AI concepts and practical software engineering applications.
• GitHub Copilot certification or equivalent AI tooling experience is advantageous.

Role Expectations

• Location: Pune, India.
• Work closely with global engineering, product management, production support, and client services teams to develop, enhance, and support AS400 applications.
• Participate in an agreed on-call or out-of-hours support rotation where required for business-critical production services.
• Demonstrate an engineering mindset by driving automation, improving software quality, enhancing application reliability, and treating operational learning as continuous product improvement.
