Description
Overview
The Research Associate provides daily care of research animals, including performing basic husbandry duties. Responsible for maintenance of the Animal Facility including regular facility sanitation. Performs in vivo research support duties such as sample collection, data collection, treatment dosing, and can develop new skills as required based on research needs. In addition, the Research Associate may assist with vitro assays and cell culture, schedule permitting.
Responsibilities
- Perform cage changes, clean cages and racks, feed, weaning litters, animal identifications and monitor animals in accordance with The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.
- Operate and maintain the Animal Facility following SOPs to ensure compliance with the IACUC.
- Maintain inventory and organization of Animal Facility supplies and order as required.
- Report Animal Facility status and communicate daily with Supervisor.
- Proficiency in various routes of injection such as subcutaneous and intraperitoneal.
- Collect blood samples.
- Perform necropsy for tissue collection.
- Monitor tumor growth and measure tumor size.
- Willingness to learn advanced in vivo techniques and assist with development of animal models of inflammation.
- Assist with in vitro tissue and sample preparation.
- Perform in vitro assays, such as ELISA, and cell culture.
- Data collection and organization.
- Performs additional job-related duties for husbandry and research support as required.
- Maintain daily records.
Qualifications
- Ability to work with animals in a lab setting.
- Ability to follow and accurately execute SOPs.
- Experience in or ability to learn a variety of animal-based research techniques.
- Experience in or ability to learn general laboratory techniques such as micro pipetting and aseptic technique.
- Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Excellent time management skills.
- Ability to lift 30 pounds and perform moderate manual labor.
- BS/BA degree or Associates Degree with experience in related field.
- 0-2+ years of experience in related field.
- AALAS certification is a plus
