Superintendent
Under the direction of the Governing Board and the administrative oversight of the Associate Dean of Continuing Education, the Superintendent serves as the chief executive officer and educational leader of BYU Academy Online Educational Services Agency (ESA).
The Superintendent provides executive leadership for the organization's mission, strategic direction, academic excellence, organizational performance, financial stewardship, regulatory compliance, and long-term sustainability. This position leads the principals, directors, and executive leadership responsible for delivering high-quality online educational programs while ensuring alignment with the mission of Brigham Young University and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The Superintendent is accountable for the overall performance of the ESA and serves as the primary liaison between the Governing Board, university leadership, and the organization.
What you’ll do in this position:
Governance, Strategy & Executive Leadership
- Develop and execute the strategic vision for BYU Academy Online in partnership with the Governing Board and Continuing Education leadership.
- Advise the Governing Board on strategic, academic, financial, and operational matters.
- Lead long-range planning and organizational growth initiatives.
- Establish organizational goals and enterprise performance indicators.
- Foster innovation and continuous improvement across all educational programs.
- Ensure alignment with the mission and values of BYU.
Academic Leadership & Organizational Performance
- Establish the academic vision and instructional expectations for all ESA programs.
- Hold principals and academic leaders accountable for student achievement and program quality.
- Monitor organizational performance through data, dashboards, and outcome measures.
- Ensure accreditation standards are maintained.
- Promote continuous improvement across instructional programs.
- Ensure integration of faith and learning throughout the organization.
Leadership & Talent Management
- Provide executive leadership and performance management for principals, directors, and senior administrators.
- Develop organizational leadership capacity and succession planning.
- Establish organizational structure aligned with strategic priorities.
- Recruit, develop, evaluate, and retain executive leaders.
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, innovation, and mission alignment.
Financial Stewardship & Resource Management
- Develop and oversee the organization's operating budget.
- Ensure long-term financial sustainability.
- Oversee tuition-based revenue strategies.
- Prioritize organizational investments and resource allocation.
- Oversee major technology, curriculum, and service contracts.
- Ensure efficient organizational systems and operations.
Compliance, Risk Management & Operations
- Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, accreditation, and university requirements.
- Oversee institutional risk management.
- Ensure student privacy, cybersecurity, and information security practices.
- Lead organizational crisis preparedness and continuity planning.
- Monitor organizational compliance and internal controls.
External Relations & Stakeholder Engagement
- Serve as the primary representative of the ESA to the Governing Board.
- Develop partnerships with educational organizations and external stakeholders.
- Communicate organizational performance to university leadership.
- Build strong relationships with students, families, faculty, and community partners.
- Represent BYU Academy Online in professional organizations and accreditation activities.
- Perform other executive leadership responsibilities as assigned.
What qualifies you for this role:
Minimum Required
- A firm commitment to the mission of BYU
- Master’s degree in educational leadership or related field
- Utah professional school leadership license (or ability to obtain)
- Minimum ten years progressively responsible educational leadership experience
- Minimum five years’ executive-level leadership experience
- Demonstrated success leading complex educational organizations
- Executive, faith-centered leadership grounded in sound governance and enterprise risk management
- Systems thinking and strategic planning to guide organizational priorities and sustainable growth
- Organizational change leadership supported by clear executive communication and stakeholder alignment
- Financial stewardship and data-informed decision-making to strengthen accountability and outcomes
Preferred
- Doctorate (EdD or PhD)
- Experience leading online schools or educational service agencies
- Experience leading multi-state or international educational organizations
- Experience with accreditation and enterprise strategic planning

Pay Grade: 56
Typical Starting Pay: $110,000 - $142,500
The actual compensation offered will take into consideration internal equity and may vary based on the candidate’s job-related experience, knowledge, skills, and other relevant factors. Candidates with very significant work-related experience may receive an offer higher than the posted typical range.
