Description of Work

Two positions, 60025887 and 60025973, are being filled through this posting. You only have to apply once and will be considered for both positions.

This position requires simple to moderately complex understanding of engineering principles for highway related structures (e.g., bridges, culverts, and walls) including design, rehabilitation, and preservation projects requiring limited interpretation of specifications and assisting higher level engineers on major or complex highway structures. Regular duties may include: Prepare plans for Preservation, Rehabilitation, and Repair (PRR) and emergency repairs for existing structures Review and evaluate engineered repairs performed by Division personnel in response to Priority Maintenance/Critical Finds identified in inspection reports. Review inspection reports and evaluate the structural condition of simple to moderately complex bridges, culverts and pipes in determining safe load carrying capacities of all structural members and connections; analyze and evaluate maintenance proposals from Division personnel for upgrades to bridge structures in effort to improve load ratings. Layout and design of bridges, culverts, and other structures in accordance with AASHTO Specifications and Structures Management Unit Design Manual, policies, and procedures Use of low to moderate level engineering software: NCBDS and MicroStation. Draft a full element model of new and existing NBIS structures into WIGINS to facilitate bridge element damage assessment by bridge inspectors. Interact and communicate internally with the Structures Management Unit. Attend conferences and classes on new code changes or computer software. Knowledge and understanding of engineering concepts and practices related to bridge repair, preservation, rehabilitation, and replacement projects. Ability to identify and plan for resources. Ability to explain/write related facts in a clear, concise and organized manner to individuals and groups. Ability to listen to and respond appropriately to others. Ability to climb bridge structures and scaffolds. Ability to keep accurate notes and records. Knowledge and ability in drafting and the use of a computer.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC16 $57,983.00 - $101,470.00

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Working knowledge of designs for construction, repair, preservation, and rehabilitation of highway structures.
  • Working knowledge of highway structure plans including conformance with NCDOT standards, policies and federal standards.
  • Working knowledge of inspection reports and the evaluation of structural condition of highway structures.
  • Experience participating in a collaborative manner during the completion of tasks or assignments.
  • Working knowledge of engineering software such as MicroStation & MS Office (i.e. Word & Excel).

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Requirements

May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
