Reporting to the Vitality Data Platform Lead, the Cloud Database engineer will serve as a key member of the Vitality Data Platform team. Primary responsibilities will include ensuring robust database security, performing regular maintenance, driving optimization initiatives, and leading modernization efforts. Additionally, this role will involve providing critical support for database-related projects, contributing to the overall stability, performance, and scalability of the platform.

Responsibilities

Delivery of critical database-related projects, including Vitality platform modernization, PostgreSQL upgrade initiatives, and pre-production environment setup. This includes ensuring secure, optimized, and future-ready database systems that support business continuity and innovation.

1. Database Strategy & Governance (20%)

• Establishing standards for database design, deployment, and lifecycle management.
• Aligning database architecture with business objectives and cloud adoption strategies.
• Driving modernization initiatives such as migration to cloud-native platforms (Azure, AWS, GCP) and adoption of distributed databases.

2. Maintenance & Optimization- BAU (10%)

• Performing proactive health checks, patching, and version upgrades (e.g. PostgreSQL, Azure SQLMI)
• Implementing performance tuning techniques including query optimization, indexing strategies, vacuuming, archiving and partitioning.
• Monitoring using tools like PG gather, Azure Monitor, and automating alerts for anomalies.

3. Engineering, Architecture & Modernization (50%)

• He will play a key role in delivering critical database-related projects, including Vitality platform modernization, PostgreSQL upgrade initiatives, and pre-production environment setup. His contributions will ensure secure, optimized, and future-ready database systems that support business continuity and innovation.
• Developing scripts for schema management, data migration, and performance benchmarking.
• Designing highly available, fault-tolerant architectures for OLTP and OLAP systems.
• Implementing data replication, sharding, and clustering for scalability and resilience.
• Introducing NoSQL and distributed architectures for real-time analytics and microservices.
• Evaluating emerging technologies like serverless databases, AI-driven query optimization, and data mesh architectures.

4. Cross-Functional Collaboration (10%)

Actively partners with diverse teams across the organization—including Data Engineering, Application Development, Cloud Infrastructure, DevOps, Security, and Data Analytics—to deliver end-to-end database solutions. This involves:

• Aligning technical strategies with business objectives through close engagement with product owners, architects, and stakeholders.
• Facilitating seamless integration between databases and application ecosystems, ensuring compatibility and performance.
• Driving joint initiatives for modernization, compliance, and security by collaborating with InfoSec and Cloud teams.
• Supporting agile delivery by working with DevOps teams to implement CI/CD pipelines for database deployments.
• Enabling data-driven decisions by partnering with analytics teams to optimize data models for reporting and insights.

5. Team Mentor for Contractors (10%)

• Serves as a technical mentor and guide for contractors engaged in database-related projects. Responsibilities include:
• Knowledge Sharing: Providing best practices on database design, optimization, and security to ensure high-quality deliverables.
• Onboarding & Training: Assisting contractors in understanding project standards, tools, and workflows for seamless integration into the team.
• Technical Oversight: Reviewing scripts, configurations, and implementations to maintain compliance with organizational standards.
• Problem-Solving Support: Acting as a go-to resource for troubleshooting complex database issues and guiding resolution strategies.
• Performance Coaching: Encouraging skill development and fostering a collaborative environment that promotes efficiency and innovation.

Experience and Qualifications

• Experienced Cloud Database Administrator with strong expertise in Microsoft Azure and modern data platforms. The ideal candidate will manage, optimize, and secure cloud-based databases while supporting data engineering and analytics workflows.
• Manage and maintain Azure SQL Database, Azure PostgreSQL Flexible Server, and Cosmos DB
• Strong Knowledge on PostgreSQL Database with minimum 5-year experience
• Design, develop, and maintain database systems, including database schemas, user, role, privileges , tables, views, stored procedures, and functions.
• Conduct database performance tuning and optimization, including indexing strategies, query optimization, and database parameter configuration and partitioning.
• Monitor and ensure data integrity, security, and privacy in accordance with industry best practices and compliance standards.
• Troubleshoot and resolve database-related issues, including performance bottlenecks, data inconsistencies, and connectivity problems.
• Conduct thorough testing and validation of database systems to ensure data accuracy and system reliability.
• Collaborate with development and operations teams. Troubleshoot database issues and provide solutions. Monitor database health and performance metrics. Automate database tasks and processes.
• Building platform environments to support auto-scaling for the business in the future.
• Liaising closely with both development and operational teams
• Conducting analyses and feeding this data back to relevant teams to support development.
• Develop and maintain database scripts and tools.
• Stay updated with the latest database technologies and trends.
• Knowledge on NOSQL concepts
• Familiarity with Databricks and Azure Data Factory for data workflows.

Education:

• Graduate/master’s degree in computer science or engineering
