Description

Location: Calgary, Alberta
Employment Type: Full-time, Permanent
Industry: Commercial Construction / General Contracting
Compensation: Competitive base salary + performance-based bonus

About the Company

Our client is a well-established, mid-sized general contractor delivering commercial, institutional, and mixed-use construction projects across Canada.

The company has built a strong reputation for managing larger, technically complex projects where careful planning, experienced teams, and close client relationships make a difference.

Its work includes new construction, major expansions, and redevelopment projects, often involving multiple stakeholders, challenging schedules, and demanding construction requirements.

The business is entering a significant period of growth. Leadership is investing in its people, strengthening its preconstruction and operations teams, and expanding its presence in key markets across the country.

With an established portfolio, experienced leadership, and a healthy pipeline of opportunities, the company is well positioned for its next stage of growth.

The team is collaborative, commercially minded, and practical in its approach. People are encouraged to take ownership, contribute ideas, and work closely across departments.

The Opportunity

We're looking for an experienced Business Development Manager to help grow the company's presence across Alberta and Western Canada.

This is a newly created position with considerable opportunity to influence how the business develops in the region.

The company has existing relationships and a strong project history to build on, but there is also a meaningful greenfield component. You'll be responsible for opening new doors, developing relationships in target markets, and identifying construction opportunities well before they reach the tender stage.

You'll work directly with senior leadership, estimating, preconstruction, and operations to pursue projects that align with the company's experience and capacity.

The focus is on building a sustainable pipeline of quality projects, developing long-term client relationships, and helping the company establish a stronger presence in the Western Canadian market.

This is a hands-on business development role with the autonomy to manage your relationships, develop opportunities, and contribute to regional growth plans.

What You'll Be Responsible For

Business Development & Market Expansion

  • Identify and pursue commercial construction opportunities across Alberta and Western Canada.

  • Develop relationships with developers, property owners, institutional clients, architects, consultants, and construction decision-makers.

  • Establish new client relationships in markets where the company is looking to expand.

  • Build a pipeline of qualified opportunities, including projects in early planning and development stages.

  • Research upcoming developments, capital projects, and potential partnerships.

  • Maintain and strengthen relationships with existing clients and industry partners.

  • Represent the company at client meetings, industry events, and networking opportunities.

  • Identify opportunities for negotiated work, construction management contracts, and competitive project pursuits.

Project Pursuits & Client Relationships

  • Work closely with estimating and preconstruction teams to evaluate potential opportunities.

  • Participate in RFQ, RFP, and competitive pursuit processes.

  • Coordinate with internal teams on proposals, presentations, and client meetings.

  • Support commercial discussions and negotiations throughout the pursuit process.

  • Maintain client relationships from initial introduction through project award.

  • Coordinate successful handovers to project delivery teams.

  • Identify opportunities for repeat business and long-term client partnerships.

Regional Growth & Planning

  • Develop and execute a business development plan for Alberta and Western Canada.

  • Identify target clients, sectors, and geographic markets.

  • Maintain accurate CRM records, opportunity tracking, and pipeline forecasts.

  • Provide regular updates to leadership on market activity and upcoming projects.

  • Share competitor intelligence, client feedback, and emerging market opportunities.

  • Work with leadership to establish business development priorities and growth targets.

  • Contribute to longer-term regional expansion plans.

What We're Looking For

  • 5+ years of business development experience within commercial construction, general contracting, or a closely related sector.

  • Strong understanding of how commercial construction projects are developed, procured, and awarded.

  • Established relationships with developers, property owners, consultants, architects, or institutional clients in Alberta.

  • Demonstrated success identifying and securing new construction opportunities.

  • Experience pursuing larger commercial, institutional, or mixed-use projects.

  • Comfortable working with senior executives, developers, consultants, and construction professionals.

  • Experience supporting RFQs, RFPs, proposals, and negotiated project opportunities.

  • Strong commercial awareness, communication, and negotiation skills.

  • Ability to manage long sales cycles and maintain relationships over time.

  • Organized, self-directed, and comfortable working independently.

  • Experience with CRM systems and opportunity forecasting.

  • Willingness to travel for client meetings and industry events.

Experience working directly for a general contractor or construction management firm would be particularly valuable.

Who Will Do Well Here?

We're looking for someone who knows the commercial construction market and enjoys developing new business.

You're comfortable reaching out to new contacts, arranging meetings, and building relationships with people who may not have an immediate project to award.

You understand how construction decisions are made and know the importance of getting involved early, before projects reach the competitive tender stage.

You can have a credible conversation with a developer about an upcoming project, work with preconstruction on a potential pursuit, and keep senior leadership informed about opportunities in the market.

You're motivated by growth, but you're selective about the opportunities you pursue. You understand that winning the right work is just as important as bringing in new projects.

You'll fit well with a team that values initiative, accountability, strong relationships, and straightforward communication.

What the Company Offers

  • Competitive base salary and performance-based bonus.

  • A newly created role with meaningful responsibility and independence.

  • The opportunity to help establish and grow the company's Western Canadian presence.

  • An established national contractor with a strong project portfolio.

  • Exposure to larger, technically complex commercial construction projects.

  • Direct access to senior leadership and involvement in regional growth planning.

  • Strong estimating, preconstruction, and operations teams to support project pursuits.

  • A combination of established relationships and greenfield business development.

  • A company investing in its people, internal capabilities, and long-term growth.

  • Opportunities for increased responsibility as the business expands.
