Description

Role Title: Carpenter I

Reports To: Lead Carpenter; Project Manager for job assignments  |  Direct Reports: None  |  Department: Production

Hours: Full-time, 40 hrs/week plus overtime as required, onsite

ROLE CONTEXT

A Carpenter I is a working carpenter with journey-level ability on assigned tasks and the capacity to work independently with moderate supervision. It is not a supervisory role, but it carries real responsibility: the quality of the work, the efficiency of the day, and professional conduct in a client's home. Most of what Red House carpenters touch is interior trim, cabinetry, and exterior details on remodeling projects. A Carpenter I is expected to be strong in finish work or actively building toward it. This is the seat from which Carpenter II is earned.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITY

Execute journey-level, profitable production activities as assigned by the Lead Carpenter or Project Manager that support the goals of the company. This position must demonstrate the company's core values of Care, Clarity, and Trust.

CORE ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Carpentry
  • Quality Control
  • Safety

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Carpentry

  • Complete any assigned carpentry task independently with minimal explanation from senior carpenters: framing, exterior trim, windows, doors, siding, roofing, interior doors and trim of all varieties, cabinet and appliance installation, wood floors, drywall, and stairs as needed.
  • Skill 2 (Basic): Take measurements and make accurate cuts; work with framers to nail, cut, and assist; know fastener types and uses; assist with siding, roofing, and window installation; read plans at the level of symbols, measurements, and scale.
  • Skill 3 (Intermediate): Use miter saw and table saw with basic finish terminology; see ahead and install siding to a given layout with correct cutting of trim, clapboards, siding, and flashings; install simple roofing with correct flashing and fastening; read all plan types — elevations, floor plans, sections, details — and find the information needed; know and use the proper materials for the application and make a comprehensive materials list for the work at hand.
  • Have the necessary hand and power tools at every job to complete any carpentry task (per the RHDB Carpenter Required Tool List); own all Carpenter I tools within 6 months of placement.
  • Assist the Lead Carpenter in ordering materials to minimize mid-day lumberyard runs; go to the lumberyard or supplier and pick out the proper materials when sent.
  • Track jobsite inventory and advise the Lead Carpenter when materials need replenishment.

Quality Control

  • Own the quality of your own work: plumb, level, square, tight joints, correct fastening — to the Red House standard, not "good enough."
  • Check rough work before it is covered (rough openings, blocking) and flag problems to the Lead Carpenter before proceeding.
  • Get answers before proceeding when plans are unclear or conflict with existing conditions.
  • Protect client property and finished work from damage, dust, and weather.

Safety

  • Organize the work area, use proper staging methods, and maintain tool care and safe tool use.
  • Install and maintain dust protection and site safety before work begins each day.
  • Keep the site broom clean daily and vacuum clean at the end of each week; keep the site clean as seen from the street.
  • Follow all company safety policies and wear PPE without prompting.

General

  • Ensure company and client satisfaction through professional appearance, expert workmanship, and polite communication; defer to the Lead Carpenter or PM for job information a client requests if unsure.
  • On a daily basis, inform the Lead Carpenter of progress on assigned work, including any client concerns, problems, or delays.
  • Be responsible for your own efficient and profitable use of the company's time, manpower, and materials on each task.
  • Complete and submit your timecard daily by 4pm with correct cost coding; submit receipts daily to Buildertrend or the cost inbox.
  • Attend all company meetings approved by the Production Manager; attend seminars and events to obtain new product knowledge and installation procedures.
  • Assist in the company's marketing program as directed (jobsite marketing, home shows, customer satisfaction).
  • Actively pursue sign-off completion and the written advancement evaluation toward Carpenter II.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

  • Work passes the Lead Carpenter's or PM's quality check on 90%+ of assigned tasks; rework on own work under 2% of task hours.
  • Assigned tasks completed within the hours allotted in the estimate on 80%+ of tasks; variances reported to the Lead Carpenter the same day, not at the end of the week.
  • Site broom clean at end of every day and vacuum clean every Friday; site protection in place before the first cut.
  • Timecard submitted daily with correct job and cost code — 95%+ on-time; receipts checked and turned in same day.
  • Full Carpenter I tool list owned within 6 months of placement.
  • Mid-day supply runs caused by this seat's planning: no more than 1 per two-week period.
  • On-site, tools in hand, and ready to work at start time; absences called in to the Lead Carpenter at least 30 mins before start time. Attendance is measured against the Employee Handbook attendance policy; approved and legally protected time off is not counted.

REQUIRED LEADERSHIP & BEHAVIORAL COMPETENCIES

Self:

  • Instills Trust — Does what they say they'll do; is direct and truthful when something is wrong or behind.
  • Demonstrates Self-Awareness — Seeks and accepts feedback on the work without defensiveness; knows the edges of their skill and asks.
  • Being Resilient — Steady under schedule pressure and changing assignments; recovers quickly when a plan changes.

Role-relevant:

  • Action Oriented — Plans the order of operations, sets up once, and keeps the day moving.
  • Ensures Accountability — Owns the quality of their own work and the condition of their work area.
  • Customer Focus — Conducts themselves as a guest in the client's home; courteous, discreet, and clean.

Core values Care, Clarity, and Trust are non-negotiable throughout.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • 3+ years of residential carpentry experience with demonstrated frame-to-finish ability, or completion of the Red House Apprentice sign-offs and advancement evaluation.
  • Journey-level ability to complete any carpentry task independently with minimal explanation; placement at Skill 2 or Skill 3 determined by the placement evaluation and the finalist carpentry assessment.
  • Reliable transportation, valid driver's license with a clean driving record, and vehicle insurance; signed Red House vehicle agreement if assigned a company vehicle.
  • OSHA 10 (achieve within 90 days if not held; maintain).
  • Full Carpenter I tool list per the RHCB Carpenter Required Tool List.

SYSTEMS

BuilderTrend (timecards, cost coding, daily logs when assigned, schedule viewing, plan sets), Google Workspace, Paycor.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

  • Rate: $26.00 – $34.00 / hour — Carpenter I band
  • Benefits (Full-Time Status), per the Employee Handbook:
    • Health and dental (company-subsidized, employee cost-share)
    • 2 weeks of accrued PTO
    • 13 paid holidays
    • 401(k) with match
    • Profit-Sharing Plan after six months of continuous employment
    • Professional development equivalent to one week of pay
    • Tool allowance equivalent to one week of pay
    • Company vehicle with fuel card (standard for Carpenter II/Lead Carpenter; discretionary for Carpenter I, subject to MVR check and signed vehicle agreement)

Job sites can be up to an hour away (plus traffic) from the office headquarters. Assignments change as project phases change; a Carpenter I may move between jobs within a week.
