(Senior) Power Research Specialist

Power, Natural Gas, Coal and Carbon Research, previously Point Carbon, Thomson Reuters and Refinitiv, is part of Commodity Research at LSEG and has a strong footprint in the global commodity community. We have been active in renewables, power, gas and carbon markets since 1998.
The location is currently open for one of the LSEG offices in Europe, with preference for Gdynia (Poland. Commodity Research also has analysts in Oslo, London, Houston, Singapore, Beijing, Gdynia, Tokyo, Lund and Sao Paulo.
Energy transition, electrification, renewables growth and increasingly weather-driven power systems are creating strong demand for advanced analytics, forecasting and AI-powered market intelligence. We are looking for a (Senior) Research Specialist to help develop the next generation of fundamental supply-and-demand models, machine learning applications and weather-driven analytics for commodities markets, with a particular focus on power markets.
Position Overview
The key task for the Research Specialist will be to develop, improve and apply quantitative models for power and commodity markets, with a particular focus on supply-and-demand fundamentals, renewables forecasting, weather-driven energy dynamics and AI-based analytical tools.
The role combines power market expertise, data science, machine learning and strong programming skills. The analyst will work on fundamental models for power markets, including demand, renewable generation, hydro and other key price drivers. The role will also support the integration of weather forecasts, climate data and AI-based methods into market analysis and forecasting workflows.
The candidate will have strong analytical and quantitative skills, high attention to detail, excellent communication skills and a genuine interest in energy markets, data science and AI. The analyst should be self-motivated, inquisitive, resourceful and able to work both independently and as part of an international research team.
Main Tasks and Responsibilities
• Develop and improve fundamental supply-and-demand models for power and commodity markets, with a particular focus on European power markets.
• Work with weather forecasts and meteorological datasets to model renewable generation, power demand and weather-related market risks.
• Explore and apply AI techniques, to improve research workflows, data extraction, forecasting support and client-facing analytics.
• Process and analyse large time-series and geospatial datasets using Python, R, MATLAB or similar tools.
• Contribute to the development of short-, medium- and long-term forecasts for power markets.
• Produce analysis, reports and insights to support traders, analysts, investors and other market participants.
• Collaborate with analysts, data scientists, engineers and product teams across LSEG’s global Commodity Research organisation.
• Communicate complex quantitative and AI-driven insights clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Qualifications
• Higher education at MSc or PhD level in data science, computer science, artificial intelligence, mathematics, statistics, physics, engineering, meteorology, economics, energy systems or equivalent.
• Strong analytical and quantitative modelling skills.
• Good understanding of fundamental supply-and-demand modelling for commodities markets; experience with power markets is a strong advantage.
• Solid background in statistics, machine learning, predictive modelling and time-series analysis.
• Strong programming skills, preferably in Python, R, MATLAB or similar analytical software.
• Experience working with large datasets, data pipelines, APIs, databases and cloud-based analytical environments is an advantage.
• Excellent teamwork and communication skills.
• High attention to detail, self-motivated and independent.
• Good command of English.

Compensation Information:
LSEG is committed to offering competitive Compensation and Benefits. The anticipated annual gross base salary for this position is between 119,200 zł - 188,400 zł. Please be aware base salary ranges may vary by geographic location. In addition to our offered base salary, this role is eligible for our Annual Bonus Plan (”bonus plan”). Target Bonus % will be commensurate with role level and posted career stage. Individual salary will be reflective of job-related knowledge, skills and equivalent experience.Benefits Information:
